Scraping Metal Is Overrated

Its way to hard to make a dollar and some cents these days with everyone and their mother scrapping.. All tips, tricks and leads welcome. We are dying here in New Jersey so post away!!!

The only way to beat everyone and their mother is to find an underserved niche market and go for it. Read some of the old posts on fire extingshers, refrigerators, etc.

Everyone and their mother has been scrapping for a while now in NJ. Years ago I was down in Garfield and there were so many scrappers it was a mad house. Lots of different people competing for the scrap at every curb. Honest people, substance abusers, you name it. Now with the economy, it is a lot worse. As Gamedayron said, pay for small amounts and then sell in bulk quantities. That is one way.

It comes down to being the first to find it if you have more looking you have less chance but still it comes down to how much money you want to make

I just started doing that and its been working pretty well.

i just had a great night, huge load :) also ran into a guy who pulled me over and asked if i would take his old boiler out of his basement, said sure not a big deal. when i went into his basement to check it out i was like holy ****!!! It's this huge round cast iron barrel shape, weight has to be 2000 pounds + any one have any tips on how i could get this out without busting my balls to bad? their is a small end of it cut off that is around 600 + pounds.

havent you heard the economy is recovering , the recession is over, every one is going back to work, just hang in there till after november when Obama is re-elected. we will once again have all that scrap to ourselves, and be dining on Porter house, again. Oh one other thing , don't hold yer breath.

it is tough all over and going to get a lot worse I think, ya just got to figgure out how to work smarter.

P.S. -I really dont think the other guy will be any better, WE THE PEOPLE are on our own I'm afraid. just my .02

Thats for sure all the regulars i know down at the yard blame the radio ad's telling people about getting cash from the trash. Pretty much pure luck around these parts. on the flip side i have tons of people wanting to sell me electronics and wire :-p

freons right, just look around, all of us are looking at stuff everyday waiting to be scrapped and chances are you step over them

You may be able to smash the boiler with a sledgehammer, but make sure you have they guy fill out a waiver first releasing you from any damages or he could sue you if you break anything. And also put down a tarp first to cut down on mess. Other than that, good luck. Moving boilers sucks, but cashing them in is great

thanks for the advice, i don't think a sledge hammer will do it. this ***** is a monster has three layers of cast. the owner cut one end off of it so I'm half way their.

what really sucks is that it's in the back of the house so i cant' even tie it off with a cable to my truck and pull it out. i also need to invest in and buy a lift gate. i will try and post some photos and video

Beware of asbestos or anything else in or around the boiler. You know they didn't install in one piece, so there has to be a way to seperate it as well. That's been my attitude on those things.

Yes for sure, thanks! job complete just got back from the scrap yard, $210 day so far. still have to rip out another staleness steel tank then i I will be going out later tonight to find more scrap.

If you are into iron/steel, do you have a brake route? I tried putting one together hitting most brake shops and repair places, but they wanted like $2 a rotor or drum. It came out to barely 25 cents profit per item plus my gas and wear and tear. I tried to negotiate a little lower, but they wouldn't have it.

how can you not come out on that when cast is 260 a ton ?

Cast iron i have done the round ones -- the nick name is octopus -- all comes down to what you can lift , You will need to bust it to size so you can lift .Secure all piping around unit , take metal casing off , look as to what holds cast iron together , those long bolts will need cutting . A good heavy mallet is what you need , It's fun work and great Money. I recently did 2 round boilers was 3800 lb there is some asbestos at joins from piece to piece , also if you have a fire chamber area don't mess with that spot to much
