Silver or not?
I took in a load of shred and on the way home I stopped at an estate sale. I literally bought $1 for $.50, a Pen7500 fishing reel in perfect condition for $20, and these mugs I took a shot on at $1 each. Figured worst case was they were stainless, mediocre they were copper, and best bet silver. I know most things are marked silver and these do not have that marking. I do not have nitric acid to test but I will be ordering some. The reason I got them was they seemed old and there was other memorbilia that looked like someone had brought it home from world war 2, figured maybe they just didn't stamp these since they were from Japan...Boy I sure hope so. I'm kind of scared to take a grinder to them because I can't find anything on ebay to get a value of them. Anyone seen these before or want to take a guess?

"CPO stands for Central Purchasing Agency and is often found on Japanese items made between 1946 and 1948 when the US operated a centralized buying system for US Army and navy bases in Japan. Toyo Koki is the name of the retailing company that sold this to the CPO."
Too bad it's not hallmarked.

Maybe pewter? If so that will bring you between $4-$6 a pound.
-
I agree with Bohemian - pewter sprang into my mind when I saw them.
-
With that kind of dating I would think there would be some collectable value.
-
any thing marked Nippon instead of Japan is very collectable.
-
If they turn out to be normal i might just buy them off you.
-
SYH, a lot of the CPO stuff won't have a country of origin stamped on it.

o they are very cool and definitely not pewter, got to see them today. The engraving work is very detailed. the base is very heavy and dense well the top was strong but light weight.
-
I would guess plated brass.

Etched pewter tankards or steins, I'd word it both ways if you decide to list them.
As freonjoe mentioned 1940's, CPO was Central Purchasing Office, someone probably purchased these from the PX (Japan) in the military.
Similar tankard, did not sell.

I'd say at least $100.00 for the set? More than scrap definately.

Have you figured out what they are? I have 4 of these mugs as well. I am trying to determine how best to clean them. They are very different. I purchased mine at a yard sale near Williamsburg, VA.
