Ever look at craigslist "garage sales" section and email the people who post. ive been and its turned out real good for the past 2 weeks have had a steady flow of scrap coming. heres my ad if you guys wanna use it

I've been trying it for a while now, but got a LOT of frustrated responses when I wouldn't haul off all their trash...hope you have better luck!

And there's no "D" in refrigerator.

I see people do that here last fall. Was wondering if it works. My main concern would be the trash. I have no outlet for glassware and clothing or books.

Donate that stuff to a Goodwill or other nonprofit with a donation box, but with Goodwill you would get a receipt of your donation to take off of your taxes,,,win-win.

I kinda did the same thing last summer but in person, would stop by their yard sales and hand out cards and talk with them for a minute. still getting repeat calls this spring.

when i started getting ready to move i loaded a bunch of household items and took it to the local goodwill to donate it. the guy came out and talked like he was shopping at dillards, then said, we don't take none of this stuff. Funny thing was, that's right where i'd bought a lot of it

I was going to do that but not sure on what to price stuff I mean some people price there stuff reasonable but some people price stuff high.

Charge them to haul away the trash, or negotiate that you'll take the trash, but pay less (or nothing) for the scrap. People like solutions. What people don't like is "no".

This is an excellent idea and one I use quite a bit. My version though I don't use a ad. Me and the wife hit yard sales for fun, so I end up talking to them in person the day of. I let them know I'm willing to pay cash money and 9 out of 10 times they ask for a number, or give me the stuff right then for free. When they do want cash it's ridiculously cheap. I picked up 4 tv's, 2 monitors, 2 microwaves and 3 toaster ovens for 4.00. Heh. Had another family toss me a bag of old golf clubs, a tv and some bed rails for a whole 2 bucks. I kept the clubs an scrapped the rest!

I think I will be stealing your ad idea though, it's to awesome of an idea to pass up.

I agree with the donating part but taking the deductions as goodwill prints the reciept I would pass on. Just not worth the potential liability/scrutiny, if you are doing it more than sparingly. Executors and estate buyers are not allowed to take the deduction (at least in NY) for anything more than their cost basis which is usually way way less than what goodwill will figure it's worth. So doing anything that requires an explanation to the tax authorities is something I'd rather avoid, I want less scrutiny not more, lol!

Even though Bill Clinton was deducting his used underwear @ $6 per......he is able to get away with things that I can't for some reason ;)

I took your idea. Made some mods to it and around here they have "yard sale" groups on Facebook. Been hitting that hard for a week. Today I got a trailer full of steel. Several trips will be made back there to get it all. Also got an aluminum truck topper too! Thanks for the idea GameDay.

Glassware and books can be sold on Ebay if you care to go that route.

And if you have something really valuable, like antique china, Ebay it or Ebid it.
