I have 3 riding lawnmower engines. Should I break them down or just take them to the yard as is?
Tear one apart, take one whole, and compare prices when you bring it to the yard - then you can see for yourself whether or not its worth it to tear apart the last one.
I think we tried to help you answer this in a previous thread. Do you have more money then time or more time then money? What is your yard going to pay for the two different options?
Me...I would take it in, drained, and turn it in as aluminum breakage or transmission price, which ever is greater.
I'd take the engines in as irony aluminum
In the previous post I asked about tearing down the lawnmowers. I ended up tearing them down because they were to heavy for me to load them up. I have way more time then money lol I got a load to take to the yard today so ill ask them what they suggest.
If you got a lot of time I would pull the engines and transaxles people buy those on CL
If you don't have another project to jump on right now I'd tear em down especially if their aluminum block
Careful asking what the yard suggests. They may tell you to bring them in whole, when it's worth more to tear them apart, just because they want to pay out less. Get what i'm sayin?
I wouldn't break them down, to much work for a few extra cents. Lawnmower blocks have steel cylinder sleves thats almost imposible is to get out. The yard will only pay you irony aluminim. Take the gas tank off and drain the oil and take it in whole. My 2 cents
if its aluminum i would break it down, not all lawnmowers have steel cylinder walls, the ones that do are no match to my hammer, couple of hits with a 16# sledge it pops right out.
Then what, with the gas tanks? There's several old tanks around here i'm not sure what to do with. I just noticed an old car tank behind the old barn, the whole end has rusted through on it. will they take anything like that?Quote:

I break engines down because i get more for the aluminum that way. I always wait until I have a couple and then work on them. the more I do the easier they get to taking apart! Only once did I have one with the steel cylinder walls and I just sledgied as much aluminum off around them as i could.
i have been thinking about building a hammer mill for things like that, or some kind of crusher hydraulic powered if possible.
The yards I use take gas tanks if you cut a large hole in them or cut them in half.Then again all yards are diffrant, might want to check with your tard first.
