Any Tip's on CRT's

New to posting on the board, but have been reading it for awhile. First off, thanks to all you guy's for all the info you post. It has been a great help. I am just starting an E-Cycle business, and just trying to figure out a few more things. My questions:
Is it best to stay away from taking CRT's and old tv's, if I am just starting a E-Cycle business?

Until I am able to afford a CRT crusher, I feel that it is best not to take them. I have access to a large amount of CRT's and old tv's, but just don't see a local market for them. Plus, they require such a large storage area. If I am missing something and some of you think I should take them, please point me in the right direction. All my hard plastics will go to a local plastic's recycler, but they only do plastics, card board and paper. Any tip's or helpful links would be great. And thanks again to all you guy's for your helpful info.

Check with the Good Wills and Best Buys in your area to see if you can drop them off. There's a ton of threads here on it.

Thanks guy's I will keep digging here. Sorry for a lame post, but ready to get my feet wet. I'll be the only E-Cycle center in my town, and have already got my ad's posted in local papers. Plus, I'm about finished with my website. Just getting nervous of how to handle CRT's, and how to get something out of them.

There is good money in Crt's don't let anyone lie to you...Like anything else it's about volume....I have about 30 stored and 20 others in various stages right now....Trust me you will need crt's to make it through the lean times....Anyways my 2 cents

Thanks Mike. I was worried about the storage space. I have access to about 300 crt's and even more old tv's. I was worried about them costing me in the long run.

My system for monitor/TV disposal is really starting to pay off. I charge $10 bucks for 32 inches or less unless they are donating computers (which I wave the fee). It's a good selling point and makes the consumer feel as though they are getting a great more for their computers than they were quoted. I take them home, open them, strip out the $5 or so worth of good stuff, seal it back up and drop it off at Best Buy. I've done about 15 monitors in the past 2 weeks like this.

Like Mike said, there's money in crts with volume. I believe Hoss would attest to this.

I also take TV's and monitors, open them up and remove all the good stuff and low grade board, then put the plastic back on and it takes a ride to Goodwill. They stated that they will take all I bring them.

Are you charging 10 bucks and then dropping them off for free?

New York State has enacted legislation requiring free recycling for CRTs as well as most e-waste. I wouldn't doubt that other cities and/or states may do the same or something similar. You can check this web site to see if there is such a program near you:

Yes, I was planning on a fee of $10, and I like Jeremiah's way. Allows the client to feel as if they're getting a deal. Thanks for the videos Mechanic688. I checked out my state Billygoat, so far Tennessee doesn't have a law, but thanks for the heads-up. Being in the County, I don't have to have a Business permit. The only thing the state wants to know is: will I have buyers. You can not accumulate for over a year. I've read all of the tennessee.gov info, and called my city/county office. I want to make sure I covered all the proper bases.

I've done hundreds of thousands it seems. Sure, the short term money isnt bad. But you WILL get tired of moving the tubes.

It might be worth it to check with Goodwill or other national thrift stores. Other places like Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, and the like might also take them for free or cheap. I would be careful about overcharging for CRT pickups because it can give someone a chance to snatch your business away from you. But that's just my opinion.

My local land fill will charge by the load, but they have a recycling department and will take 2 off my hands, free, per week. My wife can also take in 2 per week, so I can unload 16 or more per month with little problem. This doesn't really work for those of you with huge numbers, but it works for me and my numbers. The guy in charge asked me straight up what I did with all of the tv's and I told him, I opened them up and pulled out the copper. Figured I wouldn't gain anything in the long run by being deceptive. He was intrigued but had no problem with me dropping them off.

I suggest you call your city or county land fill and ask if they have a recycling department and if electronics are free to drop off. Usually they just want the back still on it to protect the tube.

Thanks for all the help. I will be posting pic's tomorrow of all the tv's and monitors I have access to. It is huge. I got started today with 28 computer towers, a couple microwave, 42 inch Samsung flatscreen and 6 printers. Plus a few other things. I'll post pictures of these as well. IS their good money in the big office printers? Also, saw and old floppy computer with the monitor built into it. Gonna grab it tomorrow. Could sale as vintage. One of the towers I got today was a working IMB 5160. Gonna put it on ebay tomorrow. Still holding off the monitors till I have room to store the tubes. Does anyone know if the old case carried mobile phone are worth anything?Thanks for all the help guys

Tear down the printers and the mobile phones, that'll tell you right there if its worth it too ya. Have fun.

Thanks. I'll post the pic's of were I'm picking from tomorrow. Since I just started my e-cycle biz, they let me load it as I go. I'm running several ad's next week as well.
