i owe these 2 guys a cold one!

thanks to this forum, i am gonna be picking up a couple bar tabs.

first i want to thank every one for their contributions to the huge stash of info that i have found here. the old posts i have been reading here are as good as a collage degree. i have picked up several ideas and tips that are already helping me get paid more, plus all the new things i am learning about computers.

i have also had the luck to live near a couple awesome forum members. i am just now learning the safe way to properly deal with computers and other high end ewaste, and really want to say THANK YOU to MIKED for taking the time out of his day to sit down with a complete computer noob and show me what i had and answer my dumb questions. its great to see some one willing to share his experience and help someone else without expecting something in return. one of the best pieces of advice he gave me was to READ THE OLD THREADS.

and then there is GOGETTER,i owe you one buddy.he and i have spoke on the phone just a couple times,but he called me about a week ago and told me about a man with "10 or 15" crt monitors for free and even gave me the phone # to call. they were located about 30 miles away from me. kind of a far drive for that,but i decided to call anyway. found out was only about 5min away from grandmas house,and i love grandmas cookin so off i went.

when i get to the place it is a computer repair shop. i speak to the owner who tells me to just pull up to the back door. i walk in to the back room and quickly become excited. turns out to be 21 old computer monitors!! when i tell him i will be happy to take them all off his hands,he looks out the door and sees my Metal Machine...a 1996 buick park ave, smiles and says well you can have as many as you can fit in your car. he dosent realize long ago i removed the back seat and cut the wall out of the trunk.i can now haul a good sized load back there. as i am loading up he asks what i am doing with them. i honestly reply that i scrap/recycle. he then asks me about printers?..yes sir anything computer related i can take. then he really starts cleaning up his back room!! after a few minutes i have 21 monitors with the wires,3 towers,8 keyboards,2 printer/scanners,12 power supplies,5 hard drives,5 mother boards(some missing pieces), almost 8 lbs of random heat sinks,and a small pile of assorted video game and computer parts.

the best part is he was so happy to be getting rid of the stuff that he would not even talk about letting me pay him anything for it even after i tell him that i am scrapping it and making $$, instead he thanks me and asks me for my phone # and if he can call me about once a month when he needs to get rid of his old/broken stuff. all i can manage to say is yes sir and thank you very much.i get about 2 miles down the road and they call me asking if i could come back and get another monitor they forgot.easy choice there.

had i not joined this forum, i wouldnt have made that call or wouldnt know what to do with the computer stuff, or might have ended up with my own set of crispy tater tots.THANK YOU to everyone who positively contributes to this forum. sorry this was such a long post but i needed to say it.

You're gonna go far in this biz !

I have to say in Shootsitall's defense he is a bright young man who apparently has some of that old "get up off your butt" energy. He is also a cook/chef in a local restaurant. He is the horse you lead to water, who knows how to drink.

I am very happy he is taking the information from the forum and using it. I really thank you for taking the time to comfirm that benifited from reading the old threads. I get some grief from others about pounding it into the new folks. I just believe its the best free education anyone can get. And with reading the old threads it makes reccognizing potential profits easier. Continued success to you, Mike.

Thats a nice haul Shoot. If I were you I would bring that guy some coffee and donuts or a pizza or something, you would surprized what it will lead to in the future. Keep up the good work.

Nice job, i like that you were honest with him about you making money. I think it goes a ways with people when you are straight with them

thanks MIKED. i should have said that i am lucky enough to have a full time job that i enjoy and pays the bills.( and i had to shave now that i am back in the kitchen)but the redneck in me loves taking things apart. i am sure that i spend more time than most scrappers breaking down things,but i have lots of spare time and save the small or annoying things for in front of the tv when i cant sleep. since i am a supplemental income scrapper, i have the time and space to store things until can take a full truck and trailer load at once. i would love to make scrapping a full time gig, but am thinking of it more like a hobby that i can do after my kitchen days are done.

great idea HAPPYSCRAPPER i was thinking about grabbing a 12 pack of donuts next time they called me, but didnt know if that would be a little weird for them to eat food that the scrap metal guy brought them?.

LANDMINE i have always found that being honest always helps to build relationships with people. almost all of the people who call me to pick things up from them call me because i have done something for a neighbor or family member.i always do what i say i am gonna do, always do it faster than i tell them it will take me, and am very upfront and honest with people about what i do. when dealing with new people i am usually willing to go out of my way a little bit and do everything reasonable to make them happy, even if i end up only making a few dollars the first time, and this has always gotten me a lot of return calls.

You took out the back seat and cut out the trunk wall in your old Park Ave? LOL I love it. THAT is a luxury hauler right there. My wife loves her old Park Ave, but when she is finally done with it you may just have inspired me to convert it.

yea the buick is a pretty fun to scrap in.i get a lot of laughs from people when i am driving down the road sometimes.especially when i have a fridge or washer sticking out of the trunk.:D

the guys at the scrap yard are amazed at how much i can fit in the buick,but i do have a trailer that i can bring if something is to big for her.any load bigger than that and i want a buddy to help anyway.
