Iam sorta new to scrapping. My local yards scrap in "gross" ton. The gross being 2240lbs. Is this common all over? Iam in socal BTW. Also watever the case can someone tell me why its more than a normal ton of 2000lbs. Thanks

The mill is buying at gross tons to make up for slag lost when melting the steel. Eight percent of every 150 ton melt is slag. They just want to make sure when they sell there steel they aren't losing money on it.
My local yard pay in net tons (2000lbs.) I noticed they have a net ton to gross ton calculator on their site. It might be helpful to someone.
