I'm new to this forum and I'm getting a new furnace in a few days and was wondering if I should tell the installers to leave the old furnace behind so I can get scrap metal from it. I was wondering if it worth scrapping my old furnace and if so what parts should I get out from it? Thanks.
The short answer is yes. Take it apart and see whats inside. Mike.
There isn't anything too exciting in a furnace. Electric motor for blower and some wire. I believe that some have some stainless in them. Old ones also had some asbestos.

I've had people want to keep the scrap on a change out before. I kind of was insulted as it cuts into my money and did not have the same outgoing enthusiasm as I would normally. I still do the job correctly and to code but I don't go the extra mile like I would have.
Depends on how big the furnace is, if it's a cast iron sectional, if you have the right tools, and as someone else mentioned, how much times you want to spend on it.
