The end cap on these motors appear to be cast aluminum is this corrcect? However I noticed on a few of them when I run a magnet over some of the around the hole in the end cap where the shaft protrudes that the magnet sticks. Is this coated someway. Nothing appeared to be pressed on. So niow I am wondering if I am better off breaking the endcap in bits to try to separate for a higher price?
Almost all motors have bearings in the end caps. Cheaper motors have pressed in bushings.
Some of the motors with ball bearings will have a bearing race a few thousands of an inch thick pressed into the end cap.
Yes cast alum. Check the prices for whole motors first and then see if it is worth it for you to break them down!
Every pool motor i came across has alum windings in there :(
Those will definetly have alum windings. Remember they are POOL motors. Have to hold up to outside weather and constant water on them.
Seems to me the best bet then is to scrap the motors whole because the windings are aluminum and many of the endcaps have a pressed bearing. I am assuming this prevents getting the aluminum price for the endcap. A shame as I have a steady source for pool motors. On the good side they do have pretty good weight to them.
Any thoughts to the contrary or a different take?
Have you actually verified that the windings are coated aluminum?
Only scrapped 1 pool pump motor and i can tell you the windings were copper.Diffidently verify each one.
I've scrapped three, all from commercial pools and hot tubs, the windings in all three were copper. The last one was an A.O. Smith 2hp bolted to a hayward super pump II, fair amount of work to break it down , but worth it to me.
I snipped through the windings on a couple I was breaking down and it appeared to have alu. look in the center all though the guage of the wire is pretty small. Does it make any difference if the motor is an above ground motor or not? I do have a couple of the larger 2 horse motors. Also does the pressed in bearing or coated bearing keep you from receiving the cast alu price on the end caps?
Yes on the end caps with steel in them. Just smack it with a drift and ball peen hammer. They come right out with some persuasion.
Windings can look copper and be Aluminum and vise a verse. I have a dental pick that has a hook with an edge, I reach into a motor and pick out one wire. An aluminum wire will pull out and cut very easy. No disassembly required, well just enough to get to windings.
