Copper and Brass Questions. New to the Forum.

I have been saving all the copper and brass from two Demo houses I did. I have about 150lb brass pipe yellow and 75 lbs of fittings. When I call the local yard they pay the same price. Is that normal? The next is a Buddy brought me half a small pickup truck load of roofing copper that was covered with tar. I let it freeze and took off about 90% of the tar then warmed it up in the stove and everything else came off but it is not shiny. I ended up with about 60lbs of copper that I folded up. What category does this go in? It's not the paper thin copper it nice and thick. I don't need the $ right now but i'm on the fence of when is best to bring it to the yard. Do prices go up in the spring? Thank you for the help

Well first off you should post an intro and tell us about yourself. to answer your question on the brass. Most yards I go to pay the same for all types of brass and bronze. As far as the copper you should get #1 price for it I would think. IF they give you #2 because of the look of tar on it then your only talking 10 to 20 cents per pound difference on average. Hope that helps.

copper sheet is usually copper2, And brass is brass unless its red brass. And by the way,welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the help. I was thinking the roofing copper would be #2. I've been saving all I can find. I have learned alot of lessons too. I had about 400lbs of BX. I stripped most of the wire out of it but didn't pull the insulation off of it. It took me a long time to get that wire out since it was old BX. Now that I have the wire out I don't think it's worth it to strip the insulation off. Everyone laughs at me when I pick up all the wire drop offs behind the electrician but i'm sure it will pay off when I need a little extra $.

Lol. I can't believe he put tar in the oven if I'm reading that correctly or maybe it was an outdoor stove?

Indoor Wood furnace not regular oven. Ened up with about 85lbs of copper after I was done. I just keep seeing places list #1 #2 and #3 roofing copper. I sure hope it ends up as # 2

Yeah, rb, you'll see all kinds of price lists on the net, but nothing counts except how your yard grades it and what they are paying that day. If you have more than one yard shop around. Good luck.

Yeah Fl scrap prices DO suck compared to what I get in MI.

Actually I was quite fine in MI. One day the wife informed me we were moving to FL. I'm good with that since I am loving the weather here but have to make sure I do whatever is necessary to keep my Michigan operation running. Fortunately I am blessed with good people!

I would assume prices go down in the spring. More people are spring cleaning and getting rid of their metals, which means there will be a rush of scrap.
