Red tape for scrap metal license

I am going to apply for a license to buy and sell scrap metal (in Britain). I have a small yard that I thought would be ok. I knew there would be a fair amount of red tape but when I downloaded the guidlines I was pretty shocked. I apparently need to apply for a waste disposal license and there is a hell of a lot of regulations. Tyre washing machine to stop mud getting on the road etc. A list of things like this as long as my arm. I don't know if it is this bad in America but if I have to follow all these regulations I cant see me getting a license.

In some places its just as bad and can be alot of fun....The reporting you have to do daily is the best part if you ask me.

I honestly might welcome regulations like this. Not because I like regulations, but perhaps it will get rid of some of the scrappers who are just bad at their job. I enjoy the line of work we do but I hate that we're in the same line of work as drug addicts who scrap to support nasty habits.

Thats what everyone wants but thats never how it works.....it will always turn into something bad.

be careful what you ask for. big brother just might give it to you. personaly if they just legalized drugs and taxed it. i et it would cost the tax payer a hell of alot less than it does now.

A harm reduction strategy concerning drug addiction is much more effective and cheaper than incarceration. I fully agree that criminal abuse/theft concerning scrap metal operations are at the core of regulation. The country would be better served by addressing the core problem of drug abuse, which is poverty, and promoting an increase in metal recycling. Diversified participation is the core of a healthy open society.

Thing is, I see scrap metal dealers (licensed) who have NONE of these regulations. They operate out of a small shed in thier back yard.

You too can do the same! The new rules just make for a paper trail they can fallow. If you get this license it shows that you are willing to prove who you are and that you operate on a legit playing field. They are less likely to come knocking on your door when investigating a theft then the guys that are not on the ledger.

My county just passed an ordnance due to high theft rates! I suspect this will help my findings as most unlawful scrappers are not wanting to sign things or have there picture taken! A little more paper work? Yes! More legal opportunity to make easy money? I think so!!

lots of people out of work, just put a bounty on tweekers. crack heads and thieves. or just make it all legal. the prices will gutter and the law of natural selection will do the rest.

Or maybe they are "grandfathered" in, by have a scrapyard long before any rules were signed in. Here in the states, as long as the original owner or his family owns it the gov't cannot close it down without a fight.

Hi onee, It's the pathetic EU regulations killing Business in the UK. I'm sure most of the ordinance for operating a scrap yard is coming from Brussels. I'm a Brit living in the USA and If there was ever a vote to get out of Europe they would have mine. I'm not alone in my thinking, a lot of the people I talk too back home are sick of Europe.
