I have an opportunity to buy a stainless steel door + frame to a vault at a closed jewelery store..
Has anyone ever handled something like this? Is it a stainless cover with solid steel on the inside? Also I'm assuming this door is goi g to be atleast a few hundred pounds. Any idvice would. Be appreciated
Some yards will not pay Stainless price if it's at all magnetic. Be sure to check the door and pins with a magnet.
yes usually there is steel behind it in the gears of the locking mechanism. plus whatever the walls are filled with. a solid SS vault door dont sound like something that would stop someone with the tools.
I'm thinking that the locking mechanism is probly magnetic but would be a pain to dissasemble
I guess if you have the time it would be a hoot to take apart. Then again I am easily amused. I think paying for this may be a bad idea. I think they should pay you to remove it. If you do it take pictures and share, Mike.
I just thought of this those doors aint cheap. can u get a model number this sound like more then scrap value if it still works. worst you could do is take it to the ghetto and sell it out of the back of ur truck someones gonna want it for something. im with u miked id keep that for myself and have fun.
Like everyone else said go over it thoroughly with a magnet. Do your best to determine how much is SS and how easy it will be to separate from the steel to get the full value out of it. Depending on how much labour is involved in removing it and how much of the weight will end up being clean SS I'm with miked that paying for it isn't something I'd probably do.
only way id pay for it is with a whole unit removal but that dont sounds like the deal here.
I've handled several of these. If you can remove it with the frame still connected and transport it in one piece, it is worth much more than scrap value. You might want to have a look at the SAVTA website to find a safe technician in your area and ask them if they would like to make an offer on it.
You must get the frame though. It's pretty useless second hand without it.
If you have to scrap it, open up the back panel (you may need a separate key for this), photograph the inside well and then remove the lock, boltwork, relockers, glass plate - everything you can that moves or unscrews. Try and keep the boltwork in one piece.
If you get the name and model number of the door (name should be on the front, model number should be on a little plaque on the rear of the door) you can ebay the lock and boltwork for good money.
I have never seen a vault door that is solid stainless - it is normally a 1-3mm stainless layer fixed to the door to stop your average idiot with oxy acetylene cutting gear.
Do not think about trying to remove the stainless from the door - you would be doing something the designers worked hard to prevent, and you will regret the day you started trying :)
UK vault doors differ from US vault doors, but over here a rectangular door and surround sized at 2100mm high, 1200m wide and 160mm deep weighs something like 3000 lb. A lower grade vault door and surround measuring 1900mm high, 900mm wide and 90mm deep weighs something like 2000 lb.
You might also be able to get the grille if there is one - the metal gate that is kept locked during the day when the vault is open. Again, worth much more on ebay or to a safe tech than scrap value. Again, if you can't get it in one piece, remove the lock and get all the keys for it as they ebay nicely.
Please bare in mind I speak from a UK perspective so vault door composition may differ in the US.
Be prepared though - vault doors are heavy and they take some proper tackle to move them safely.

Thanks wayne and everyone else for your advice I also thought about resale but wasn't sure if it works or not. When I said I have an opportunity to purchase I leftout that its part of a liquidation auction ending soon and its currently at. 02 cents probly because its a lot of work to remove them.
There's not much to go wrong with it if you have the key/combination and it locks and unlocks. Could you bid 3 cents, then take the innards and lock for ebay and leave the rest if it was way too much hassle? You wouldn't lose out :)
