Yes I know rail roads are taboo, but if you get the right paperwork, it can be done legit. I know a guy who said that the railroad has to pay to have them removed. So, we are talking approx 6-8 hundred pound batteries. Would you take something like this to a scrap yard, or neutralize the acid and cut the lead out? Seems like a good opportunity if done legit.
I donno, would the yards take them that large?
My brother gets a lot of RR batteries. He takes the "as is" to the scrap yard.
do you need special "train-ing" to handle locomotive batteries :)

To break them down yourself..
First, you have to deal with the sulfuric acid.
They, remove, filter, electroplate metals out of it, concentrate it & reuse.
Plastic cases, gotta be cleaned & they are covered with acid & oil & dirt & then disposed of.
They crush, remove, wash, recycle.
Lead, you make a kiln, use energy, melt lead, remove dross, sell contaminated lead & now have to dispose of the plastic & dangerous lead dross & inhale lead fumes as well.
They, enviro friendly, clean lead off the plastic dividers, melt lead & ingot it, they remove dross & turn it back into solid lead & check all lead for Cadmium etc content & sell it right back to the battery manufacturers.
