Non magnetic silver nuts, if not brass are they stainless?

So I have a bunch of good sized silver nuts. they are non magnetic and non sparking. When I grind them I don't see any yellow to indicate brass, I also used a hack saw to made a deep cut to make sure and no yellow. Are these a stainless steel then? I googled left and right and couldn't find any answers, does anyone here know what they would be? Some of them are about 3 inches across and some are thumb sized, can't remember what they came off of and the big ones were just loose in a box. Thanks for any help! :o

Stainless is very likely accurate.

It would be stainless I have never encounted silver nuts ever. Good test take a hammer and beat it if its silver it will bend if its stainless you probably wont even dent it and the hammer will glance off it. Silver also is soft and stainless is very hard.

Stainless steel does spark.

The surface may be chrome.

Mick, I think the 150 watt light bulbs in my dads garage makes it hard for me to see sparks on the small grinder, but I didn't notice any like I can see a stainless piece of pipe throw so thats why I thought they were brass at first. How think would chrome layer be and would chrome throw tons of sparks or just one or two? I know there was a spark chart on here somewhere I remember I'll have to look that back up again.

Thickness - just depends. Could you cut into one a quarter inch or so? That should tell you what the base metal is. Maybe cut one in two and post a picture?

Yeah, I only hacksawed about an 1/8 of an inch, figured that should have been deep enough. I'll go deeper it looks like is necessary. Thanks Mick! I'll see what I can do!

I've had some aluminum/zinc nuts and bolts before too. Nothing bigger than a pinky nail though... Just a thought.

Unless I have a lot of them I just put them with the steel. When you have screws, bolts or nuts with your stainless they always check them out, then start to check other things. Most of the stainless ones will have a slight pull with the magnet.
