Picking up 50+ monitors and 4 or 5 towers tomorrow

I saw an ad under the computer section of CL and it said 35+ monitors. It was posted at 3:40p today and the ad was still up as of an hr and a half ago, so I text the guy my phone number and he called me back in about 15 seconds and come to find out he has 50+ monitors and 3 or 4 macs that he wants to get rid of b/c he has to much going on including a full time job. He wants $30 for all of it. I'm renting a 4x7 utility trailer for $15 and now I really need a storage unit. Time to go talk to my dad's friend who owns a storage company. I figure I'm only going to need it for a week or less. Boy oh boy is my copper and aluminum pile gonna grow! It's a 65 mile round trip so it should only be about an 1/8 tank of gas so all n all including the $30 total money spent will be about $70.

thats a sick score to say the least. watch the chocolate rose with Craigslist ads though :-p whatcha gonna do with all them tubes?

Just a warning, a lot of Craigslist add like this are gutted monitors/towers, where someone has scrapped out all the goodies and are using you to haul away with what they don't want to deal with. Ask specifics before spending your money/time/gas to get them. If you do rent a trailer to go get them, get a guarantee that things won't be given away before you get there.

I was the only one that had called him. I did talk to him on the phone for about 15 minutes. He told me he just wanted to get his shed cleaned out so he could put some lawn equipment in it. About the glass, I can call my township and they will come pick them up free of charge or I could drop them off at the public works building. I recycle everything including abs plastics. I don't get paid for the plastic but I would rather see it recycled/reused then it end up in a landfill somewhere.

Generally if you finalize all copper prosability's of monitors / not just the yolk - wires copper on the boards each monitor can have 1lb or close to it of copper . Then you have some times almost 1LB of AL . The TV tubes if you are suicidal have some TIN & the board has weight. rest is garbage
so here is the value I go-by each unit should Gross $4.10 as of current rates . 55 monitors should = $225.50 gross amt.
The macs might be a saving grace as to pure scrap value or re-sale . Profit for CRT's is $155 that you will work you butt off for . Positive cash flow is always better then ZERO. about 20 hrs of work not inc driving and removing the garbage portion

Place the tube in a large trash can...Throw cinder blocks into it from a few feet away, after hearing glass break, run and close the lid...then wait a bit before gettng the tin...

LoL CH I am crazy enough to do it just don't wanna do all that though. If there was more in it I probably would. I'll let the twp deal with them.

Some tv's do have a nice round circumference chunk of steel that passes as short . I hold my breath & do-it out side I also hope for a little wind , old glass i leave for glass re-cycler

Break the little 'pigtail' of glass inside the plug on the back of the tube.
Wear safety glasses & earmuffs & a full face sheild when muckking around with the tubes though.
Sometimes I just, with gloves etc, wiggle the plug around & when the pigtail breaks you can hear the air get suckked into the tube.
Otherwise I use a long bit of metal & tap around the plug until I hear the air get in, wait till its all full.

Don't lift by the tube end & don't relie on the steel band to lift the tube, they are sometimes loose & will slip off, leaving the tube to drop 3 feet & smash around your legs...

Then I put the tube face down on my wheelie bin & start tapping around the tail & break off bits & let them drop onto the screen.
Those bits get put into the bin untill I can get to the metal screen, I pull that out, hardish to do & its close to the broken glass edges, use gloves of course.
Get good acess & use a screwdriver to push the tabs so you can remove it.
Then I keep smashing & let it all drop into the wheelie bin.

Over here as soon as you break it, it's considered hazardous waste.

Just make sure you discharge them first...right Hoss?

On the subject of lead in the CRT - Does any one know where it is ? . Is it mixed with the glass ? I never actually saw typical lead that could be sold as lead from a CRT Lead is about .50 .60 per lb
I guess this metal business is not healthy

No lead metal, but leaded glass that is used, needed to make the glass strong enough and also to block xrays.

It isn't just glass, it's CRT's. They might not take them.
