I like to say I Have been hoarding scrap for last 10 years but only have made it 40-50 hours a week for the last 2 years finding my self out of work due to layoffs and plant downsizing. since i knew how to be a scrapper it was a logical decision for me to take that step.
I spend most of my scrapping time outside of the garage buying machines up to 10,000 lbs and stripping them either on location or on one of my trailers.
The best deal this year for me was $0.15 a lb for a 3500 lb 304 stainless steel "parts washer" with motors and electrical components intact. two days to strip was given electrical hook ups and permission to strip it on location and use of any lifting equipment with in the facility. I made around $2000 off that job. greatest day ever.
I don't do the garbage day drive around it might not pay off some nights. hover i run a free appliance pick up service in the city i live.
i have purchased 5000 lbs at a time of copper bearing motors from a couple of small scrap yards when they were just starting up. I striped them all!!! that is hard work even with a reciprocating saw. it can pay off if you set your self up right. except now it seems those 2 scrap yards only want to sell to me if i buy 15,000 lbs at a time. nice!!! Jerks.
