... and so it begins
Well, summer in seattle is officially over! Lots of rain clouds and showers to look forward to for the next few months pretty much straight. I have never been one to shy away from getting amazingly dirty to make money for my family. I was wondering if the feeling is mutual here in our little scrapping community. I just started my business a few months ago, and havn't gone through a winter scrapping yet. Do you guys find that work picks up or slows down this time of year? i would think the people that don't mind trapsing around in the mud (such as myself) would do alright since the compatition would dwindle. any thoughts?

Competition slows down in the winter, but so does the scrap metal. Here in Idaho it's pretty much all farm land. When winter hits, it's all frozen. And NOOOO farmer or rancher wants to be out walkin' their fields in 6 inches of snow and ice, looking at steel thats frozen into the land.
Last winter was TOUGH for me. All i did was scrap metal. I was literally at one point, counting on the day i cashed in my aluminum cans to pay for my cell phone. It gets tough, but it's possible.
I'm in the E-Scrap game, now. I know i'm going to take a hit this winter, as i survive off big box companies that get donations, then i get the electronics. In winter, they dont get as many donations, because who wants to clean out their garage/storage unit/house when it's 5 degrees out? I'm hoping Christmas (sorry, "Holiday" for all you politically correct folk) brings in a lot of donations.
Moral of the story, only the tough survive. Do NOT give up. Just keep pluggin' along, give 110% every cold ass day, brew a couple pots of hot coffee and continue.

I don't look for new stuff in winter. I've got some small businesses I pick up in the winter and tear down what I've stockpiled. But basically, I hibernate by the wood stove.

What we have covering the ground about six months of the year - Nov to April. Although we've gotten snow in October and May. I once stood on a snow pile in the middle of May and swatted a mosquito.

here the winter thins out the also rans, the wannabes the skimmers and some of the tweekers, so I look forward to winter here.

Everything picks up here in Florida during the winter.

Last winter was when I started and it was pretty thin then before so many ppl started doing this, I used to have the monopoly on my town with maybe one other guy pretty much. Not any more. I'm stockpiling and I hope I have enough contacts to keep me going.

Business picks up for me. My dad's a plumber during the winter and gets tons of water heaters, furnaces, boilers, and a whole bunch of other stuff. He doesn't want to bother with it, so he gives it to me for $20 a load

Mick, I can't tell ya much about the snow, but them ol skeeters? We got em bad down here. Year round brother. Not as big as they grow em in Texas ( Kris Kringle can tell ya how big ), but way more!
Anyway Feb. is probably our only real winter month and by then some of us is looking for a little time off. But you can bet that by March we all pretty much back in full swing.
