I got snapped tonight by a computer monitor after everything had been removed. I was reaching around it to grab the back of it to screw back on and when my arm went by it ...snap!!!! I thought that could only happen when the suction cup wire was was on it? My arm was about 8 inches away from the tube I'd say. Where did the charge come from?
We weren't there to see it but like I've said before, the can caps on the main circuit board can retain voltage for a week or more if the bleed off resistors are not working properly. Did you make yourself up one of those cheap ground straps to bleed off those voltages like I suggested???(bet I know the answer to that one!) Someone fed you some false info and I'll bet it stung ya.Get a large screwdriver and run it across the circuit board on the bottom(solder side) and any residual voltage should bleed off as you short it out. So the charge came from the metal around the face of the tube then? Everything was off, it was just the glass tube sitting in the plastic except for the metal band. That's what confused me. I am going to revisit your post on that - after you posted it I knew I had the parts at my dads but got so busy I totally forgot about taking them out and doing it.
The big tube can also hold a charge, the way it sounds like that's what got you. You can also bleed them off with a ground wire attached to the screwdriver and attach the other end to some grounded metal.
