Need some advice on breaking these welds

Hey, i recently acquired these old payphone wall frames from a hotel demolition that a friend of mine was working. he scraps aluminum and copper but not ferrous so he gave them to me.

my question is how to break these welds that attach this stainless steel box to the outside of a steel one. its a strange setup, without much room to work.

would a chisel work? i'm kinda leaning toward the chisel to break these 8 or so spot welds. has anyone done that before, or would i just be damaging my tools? any advice on the subject would help. i wish i had some pictures to post what the thing looks like.

you'll get some advice from the vets, soon filthy, but if you have a chance, let us know how many of them you have....if I had a few, I'd use a grinder...if I had hundreds, I rent something bigger and badder ! good luck.

thanks! i believe everything you just said. i have much faith in the vets, including you, dee. there are 4 of them total. with 8 welds on each (i believe).

Can you post a picture? It would be so much easier to answer once I see the problem.

If its spot welds you can drill them out, a grinder does wonders on welds, you can torch them out, or if your persistent a hammer and chisel could work.

Looking at that, if the welds are the darker round areas on the inside lip, I would bet a chisel and a big hammer would pop them with little trouble.

If it were me I would just use a hand grinder. That is untill I get enuff money to buy the plasma cutter.

thanks fellas, im gonna give the hand tools a shot first, see if i can make it work. i will also keep an eye on this post, and give an update when it works out.

Spot welds can be easily drilled out. You just drill the weld (you dont have to go through). If you go far enough (youll know when) the weld will pop off.

gave up and cut 3 sides above the lip and the remaining welds popped right out.
