I think they are the CO2 tanks - the big silver ones bars and restaurants use. Guy in front of me had one turned away they told him they dont accept them because it encourages young folks to steal them so there is a law by me regarding this. Interesting item, I'd never thought of that.
Not that I would, but I could think of better things to steal and they're not illegal. Funny how each state prioritizes the worth of items.
Are you sure it wasn't a Soda Keg? I think most states outlaw scraping kegs because so many of them were stolen and I believe they are techinally property of the brewery/soda bottler.
With reference to a keg belonging to the brewery, it doesn't. I scrapped one that i was given last month and had no problems. When you buy a keg of beer you put a deposit down that you get back if you bring the empty keg it back, if you don't than you basically bought the keg. the deposit is a lot more than the keg is worth as scrap for incentive to take it back since they refill them.
i know in jersey, a friend of mine used to steal kegs and scrap them. the yards took them, but they looked at him like a scumbag because they knew he stole them. the deposit is exactly for that reason, to encourage people to return them instead of keeping or selling them.
he still tries to convince me to let him steal a few and take him to the yard. i have to remind him that those days are behind him, and i will not get involved.

If I find kegs which is not often I take them back to the liquor store and I get the $30-35.....I've only found 3 though. They only weigh 25-30 lbs so i'd rather get the $30-35 and save myself the 12 mile trip to the yard and get 2x the $$.

the yard i go to will accept propane tanks and suck as short steel or heavy steel if they are cut in half.
I'm not sure about the legality of other tankls, but if they are legal to scrap the will take them cut

Don't know if its illegal; but, when I was asking Alter about what they accepted they said NOT kegs and microwaves (and others)
The processing facilities are who wnt accept a sealed cylinder, I've posted this before but those of you in good with your yard ask them about the sealed cylinders that people sneak in or just leave because they are not accepted. My yard gives them to me I cut tem in half and sell them back, today I got a Gaylord 3/4 full of aluminum fire extinguishers and medical oxygen tanks, trust me its pretty nice to get a pick up where you sell your scrap
