Job Offer
So I had contacted the local 1800-got junk franchise about getting in with him to get their e-waste. After we got to talking he offered me a job as an operations manager for the local area. I'll still get the e-waste too. Even if I don't take the job I'll still get the e-waste.
Apparently the previous Operations Manager spent more time in line at the scrap yard than trying to get more work.
Have any of you worked for any of the franchises? Pros and Cons?
I know they're pretty pricey when it comes to their pickup fee's but it seems to be a pretty good model for them.

I would not get into it. Once another junk yard gets you..they will learn where you go one way or another. Stay on the outside an keep things sweet. Dont loss your accounts.
-
I would do it. You could even make him more money with the scrap metal. I assume that the company gets the metal and the last guy was skimming off the top.
-
I would totally do it for about 2 months and keep a list of their repeat clientel, then offer cash to these folks for their metal and do some shameless self promotion. As long as they don't make you sign a non-disclosure deal, you're in the clear. I mean seriously, what kind of business venture requires 90k for initial start-up? Is that for land? Utility overhead? Insurance? Personnel? As far as I know, they just charge an astronomical fee to pick your trash up, sort it, dump it, and scrap it. Not really a worthwhile service, but if it looks semi professional and even comes with an 1800 number, they will get clients. People just like the familiarity and comfort of seeing a uniform business model arrive at their door with a handy 1800 number in case they want to ***** about something.

Yeah I'm not buying a franchise I'd be running the show for the franchise owner. As far as working for a few months and quitting I couldn't do that.
As far as the previous Operations Manager he would take the scrap to the yard and not report it to the company, while on company time.
Also like I said the prices are pricey, but you can charge what the market will bear. Especially when you have an established brand, clean trucks, uniformed personnel and a professionally manned call center.
I'm still up in the air about it, I have a pretty good day job already, but this could give me the access to the e-waste to take plaxant to the next level. And a bit of a raise... My wife isn't sure either. A lot to think about and have a frank discussion with my current employer Monday morning.

Be careful of any non-compete clause. I think that's what TheFatMan meant. These companies are serious about them. They could keep you from scrapping ANYTHING while employed and for a certain amount of time afterwards.

I hope you figure out the best thing for you and your family. As far as promoting your business while working for them, that is exactly the kind of thing that can give you a negative reputation. Not to mention get you canned. Practicing good business ethics goes a long way. Remember, this company is a competitor. Working for them and getting them more accounts could potentially take away from your business and slow down growth. As you stated, the regular scrap already goes to the company and he is willing to give you his e-scrap. You are a definite winner this way. This way you can focus energy on growing your business and getting YOUR business accounts and not his. Maybe you could sit down with your wife and make a pros and cons list, this helps a lot of people make some tough choices. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. After a lot of discussion with my wife, talking with my boss, I declined the job at 1800 got junk. I do have a really good job already. A boss that pretty much gives me free reign.
