I have about 50 lbs of 3rd wire #1 (varnished) and 25 lb of painted #1 A/C and compressor tubbing. My yard pays substancually less for the varnished/painted copper, so need a solution. amd preferably not $15 dollar a gallon, varnish remover. lol Itried muratic acid it ate all the copper and left the varnish :)
Well, I do know you can filter and re-use most things like paint thinner and varnish remover. Might not hurt to just buy a gallon of it, and run it through some filters. Especially if you get varnished copper often enough.
Toilet bowl cleaner works. Wear plastic gloves.

I've heard you can clean nasty burnt-on stuff off of oven racks or grill racks, by spraying racks with oven cleaner and then putting them inside a black garbage bag in the sun for several hours. Then they rinse clean.
That might work for the wire, too, but you'd need a good place for rinsing. Wear gloves and stay out of the fumes. I used oven cleaner to remove lettering & logos from a concession trailer once. Worked well.
