Anyone ever scrapped out a 12 ton ac unit? Ideas on weight of copper an motor in them?
I am getting 5 12ton units but due to space have to sell them to a sister company I work with. They told me they will pay me a % of the total metal scraped out of each one.I don't have a clue how much metal (copper) is in each one...don't want someone keeping bigger pockets than they should be..
No sure what units you have but my company makes the condenser fan motors that go in these. I've been to the York plant and seen as many as 6 of these fans in one of the big rooftop units. Each motor has about 2 lbs of copper in it. Of course, the big quanity is in the coil (watching a fin press put those fins on the coil is an impressived thing)
Jeez, 12 tons? I guess everything IS bigger in Texas
It doesn't actually weigh 12 tons. I forget why they call it that. A central air unit for a home is about a 2 to 3 ton unit, but weighs around 300 to 500 lbs I would imagine.
EDIT:
1 ton equals 12,000 BTU. Has to do with cooling capacity.
Oh, so like your standard rooftop commercial AC unit? Here I was, picturing the flatbed trucks hauling in ACs the size of a small building.

Easyrecycle would be the one to clarify, but yeah I do believe he is talking about the roof top units you see on malls, commercial buildings, etc.
You are right. I wish they where 12tons each =-D I would be going far more crazy than I am now. They weight a good bit...not sure how much tho. The 12ton part is based on the cooling as someone said or..thats that I have been told....its one of those things where I say...ok what ever you wana call it is fine....but I want it.Quote:
