Picked up a nice piece of brass the other night. It weighs 9 lbs. It was enclosed in an aluminum housing with a motherboard. This water valve has a steel shaft in the center (it's magnetic) which i want to remove.

To be honest, it doesn't really seem to me like it would be worth it to remove the steel shaft in the center. Probably more work than it's worth in my opinion.
How much do you think the thing weighs without the steel?
Take the packing nut off and go from there. If it doesn't want to come off, use a thin cutoff wheel and cut down both sides and separate it.
this is when I grab my BFH, big f'n hammer, like a sledge, PUT GOGGLES on and smash the little f#$er lol
I'd check with your yard, too. Mine takes these valves as Clean Yellow Brass, even with the stems.
I don't think the steel weighs much at all. But I don't want to get shafted at the yard either. Otherwise I might need that sledgehammer.
