Just a quick note to all my friends with pets. If what they are saying about shelves being cleaned out in stores, you may want to consider stocking up on food for your pets. I am not convinced we will be affected as badly as we have been told by the news, but if there is a pause in delivery of goods, you don't want to be worried about your pets.
This virus does not only scare us about our health but also the businesses. I hope this ends up soon.
We already ran out of pet food. I guess pets are on the menu now.
Costco around here can't keep up with bottled water and toilet paper people are hoarding stuff. I told my wife we need to get a bag of bird seed then if it gets bad eat dove and quail cooked over the fire pit out back.....
With this discussion, it begs the question, are you contributing to the panic, or preparing for it? Seems like people go from one extreme to the other. If you stock up on food, stock up on ammo, if you stock up on ammo, stock up on fencing and 5 hour energy drink, if you stock up on fencing and 5 hour energy, stock up on friends to guard your stash. If SHTF, it's not going to matter. Really. Just like insurance. Everybody should have it, if you don't file bankruptcy or set up a GoFundMe. With all the preparing people do over the years, someone has a big pile somewhere. I just don't subscribe to the panic.
Not going to be a lot of fun when there are only 10 people left on the planet. And from what I've see, it won't be survivial of the fittest or smartest. It will be the dumb lucky ones.

They say corona has been floating around here for 6 weeks unnoticed until people started passing away at a nursing home. We have 20 or more first responders quarantined in a firehouse several showing flu symptoms from going into the nursing home. Anyhow made it down to the scrapyard this weekend and was at the brewery celebrating when got the call first fatality
We are up to 12 today.
Have stopped taking the bus to work and stopped going into work and had shifts cancelled on a part time job
Things will be different from here on out
I did not say to buy a pallet of dog food, and I don't think a couple months supply is hoarding or keeping anyone else for stocking their pantry. I live in a hurricane zone and am used to preparing to be able to keep going for a month or so without pinching our lifestyle significantly. Stocking up when supplies are plentiful and cheap is prudent, not paniced.Quote:

Soooo ... we muddled through Y2k, the 2012 shtf scenario and global warming. We're prepped, locked & loaded, and ready to go.

I should go buy TP and water bottles (and washer fluid - I blame the stores for low stock on that - idiots) from sensible neighborhoods so I can resell in mine. I removed it because it freaked me out that the news station (or that's what they said they were) contacted me about a stupid copy and paste letter. It freaked me out that leaked letter warning of the virus being present in my community (2 miles from my house) and nothing was being said. It freaked me out how I was told that it was a hoax. It freaked me out that the "hoax" turned out to be exactly true the next day as I was told it would. It freaks me out some that we aren't being told that it is all over, just like the annual flu. Why is it being made out to be the black death? I am coming to the conclusion that it is just being used to undermine President Trump and the US economy by the Trump and America haters (foreign and domestic), without regard to people as a whole.Quote:

Tornado season is upon us and the new virus will soon be old news.
I was talking with my wife this evening and she was saying that there's a shortage of hand sanitizer. They can't order in any in at the store because it's out of stock.
I get the viewpoint that it's just another strain of the flu. The problem is that there are some pieces of the puzzle missing. I don't think we have all of the information.
You have to remember that this started in China. The Chinese seem to be a pretty expedient people and not given to panic. They took some pretty extreme action to try and keep this thing contained in Wuhan. They pretty much locked down the entire city and sent folks out in bio hazard gear to sanitize public areas.
Why would they react so strongly to something that's just the flu ?
Is it a cultural thing where they have a morbid fear of germs ? Doesn't seem so ... they still use squat toilets and those things are filthy.
It's gotta be something else. I suspect that they comprehend something that's just a bit beyond our understanding right now. :-/
It kinds reminds me of old Henry David Thoreau. ;)
He went off in the woods to live by himself and really had nothing good at all to say about humanity in his philosophical writings. Everything he saw of the world was filtered through that cynical lens of perception. His worldview wasn't all that different from the flat earth folks or the conspiracy theorists.
Poor old Henry ... he died at age 44 of Tuberculosis.
Maybe that's the thing ?
See .... TB really isn't a thing anymore. They came up with a vaccine and all but snuffed it out.
MERS & SARS are also earlier variants of the corona virus. They pretty well contained those ones.
Maybe containment is the first best option ?

As far as bottled water, it never makes sense to me to buy bottled water that is produced in another community of the same quality I can get out of the tap. With the current situation I traveled to Dallas for the American Rodeo because airline tickets and motels were cheap caused by the panic and the declining financial markets. I am also buying stocks because others are selling. I am not going to change my lifestyle because of "what might happen." If it was meant to be, as an individual I am not going to change Gods
plan. By the way, thanks for the reminder, snow tires are on sale now.

I always take what I consider normal precautions against flu and what not - wash hands frequently, no drinking directly from cans or bottles not cleaned off first etc... I have taken the extra precaution of using gloves when filling with fuel - normally I just sanitize hands afterward and I do have supplies in case of a natural disaster in my basement.
So I think its time to start this. How do we think all this will affect scrap prices? Gas going down, but were probably importing less then we were before from Asia, should this increase demand on the home front? Is uncertainity going to make prices drop? Checked today, everything but copper and brass is steady from 2 weeks ago by me. Copper down 10 cents across the board, brass 6 cents. Thinking of selling this weekend...
Knee jerk reactions and speculation is what I think, but what do I know.
