Hello, Newbie here with questions.

Hello everyone, My name is Perry. I'll be honest, I've always thought scraping metal was a pretty silly thing to do, as i get older i'm starting to think otherwise. I am currently unemployed and like alot of other people in this country finding good work is like finding a needle in a haystack. I've been thinking lately about getting into metal scraping for means of income but i have a few questions. First.. Does anyone do this as a full time livable income job? Is the money there if you dedicate hard work? If you live in an area with cold winters is this a seasonal only job?
I've been thinking about buying a pickup truck and finally giving this a shot, full time, 8 hours a day and hopefully making good money with it, I just don't want to waste my time. I appreciate any information you metal guru's can provide :)

some guys do it 7 days a week, 8 or more hours a day. also other guys (like myself) do it whenever they can find metal. some weeks you can make 2,000 or something, and other weeks you could make zero. it all depends on how hard you work and how much effort you put into it. if you just sit on your as s and post adds on craigslist and wait for people to come to you (not saying its bad to do, but if this is what your only doing, it wont get you a living) then you wont do so well. its all in your hands. start out with business cards and leave them around and give them to people. let people know that you are a scrapper and get your name out there.

Scrapping is in no way a seasonal job. Just cuz it gets cold and snows, doesn't mean people's appliances don't break, or companies stop generating scrap. Virtually everyone does it year-round in some way. It's just a bit harder to do in a coat and thick gloves.

I think you'll have to figure out what kind of scrap is still available in your area. As an example; some people scrap cars, trucks, and farm machinery while others do general scrap along with appliances. Still others refine thereselves down to electronic scrap. If you have 30 scrappers in your general area that scraps cars/trucks, you sure don't want to start there. Hope this helps as we don't know your area of the country.

Being a scapper is nice..you can pick your own hours..but you cant be lazy either...being lazy means your pay check will be just as lazy as you where that week.

So as any other job you have to get out there an hit the dirt every day.

Always keep an eye curbside while driving around the town, not just on trash day. There's no schedule on when someone will put something curbside.
