Hi All!

Hello everyone,

New member here from Ontario, Canada. I wouldn't really call myself a scrapper yet but I've always had an interest in the field! I find it awesome that there's a community dedicated to collecting, recycling, and earning $$$ from things like scrap, electronics, etc.

I'm mainly here to recieve some advice on what to do/what has value with the e-waste that I've accumilated from my household (about 20 years worth of) and I figured this was the best place to be.

I'm looking forward to reading all the stickys/topics and learning more about scrapping!

Read around in the e-waste sections. look at the buyers area to get a sense of categories of ewaste and prices (https://www.scrapmetalforum.com/scrap-buyers-sellers/)

Basically what I do for computer towers is:

take everything apart, tower case goes into the shred (light iron) pile. Mother board goes in the motherboard crate, processor goes into a box of processors (that I will occasionally sort and sell when the box is full), finger cards go in a box, I take apart the powersupplies, the board in it goes in a low grade board box, aluminum heatsinks get taken off cause they get more than low grade board, so that goes in its own box. All the cables get cut off and put in my insulated wire box. Ram gets categoriszed into 2 piles for me (better than scrap, which is 2GB+, and scrap which is <2GB).

Thats pretty much what I do. If you have 20 years of ewaste you can do something similar. Pretty much its just taking the stuff apart, and putting like stuff together, and finding where will pay the most for the stuff.

Thank you for the guidance! I'll have a look at the e-waste and prices section as you suggested. Unfortunately, because of time and space constraints, I'm looking to just offload what I've got (a van full) to whomever is willing to pay a fair price in my region. I'll make a seperate thread detailing exactly what I've got and go from there.

If you are just trying to unload everything, check craigslist in the "wanted" section to see if anyone local buys computers. I have an ad out on craigslist that Ill pay $3/tower. So if you have a van full that could be some good money. If you cant find anyone on craigslist (and even if you can) google scrap yards in your area and check their site to see if they take e waste. only 1 of my local 3 yards does. They pay $0.07/lb for laptops and desktops. So if you have 1 Ton of computers thats roughly $140.... which isnt a bunch. Bt if you are just trying to unload it, might be fine, but a person like me that will strip them for profit rather then wholesale them would likely get you double to triple that.

I don't doubt it, the fact that you can turn the same pile I've got into 3x its value. I think I'll be doing that for any future scrap I get as it's much easier to manage a few things at a time versus the pile I've got lol.

What forum section would be the most appropriate for my post? I would just like to get an idea if anything I have is valuable. I have an imgur album of pics and a list of what I've got sitting around ready. Forum members like Ewasted and Matador here will buy different stuff in any amounts as far as I know, but both require some amount of sorting and such to give an accurate estimate. I would just make a post in the general electronics scrap forum sectionhttps://www.scrapmetalforum.com/gene...ics-recycling/

with pictures and asking if anything is of particular value. But usually the only way to know what you have is to go through it and separate it all out

You never know, you might have a diamond in the rough somewhere in the pile but it's more likely not if it's just general household stuff. Some of the things like " Bubble Back " tv's & monitors actually have negative value. Often times ... you would have to pay somebody to take them off your hands because they contain toxics like lead and mercury.

It sort of all comes out in the wash if you know what i mean ?. Some of the stuff has a little bit of value. A lot of it is just trash that has to be disposed of because it has no recycle value. If you consider the time & expense involved with driving to your place, loading up the truck, breaking it all down for a little bit of scrap value, and properly disposing of the waste product ?

You would probably be just as well off to list it locally under the "free for the taking" category and see if you get any bites. Seems like it would be a fair enough deal if someone would be willing to haul it off for you. Make sure that they understand that they don't get to cherry pick though. They either take it all off your hands or take nothing.
