New Scrapper from Kansas
As the title implies I'm new to scrapping. I've started collecting scrap as a little side business to supplement my income, however I've yet to go to the scrapyard and cash anything yet. I'm collecting e-waste, ink cartridges, as well as anything metal, of course. I've got a nice collection of aluminum cans, aluminum from computer towers (checked with magnet), computer parts, an old alternator from my car, steel fencing, several old bikes, old broken steel dog food dispensers, iron items, and other misc. steel items. I'm saving it all up until I have enough to make it worth the drive. I've got a regular day job, but I'd like to operate my scrapping as a sole proprietorship to take advantage of tax savings if I can. I plan on hauling in my scrap 3-4 times a year, possibly investing in a trailer and deducting it as a business expense (as well as mileage for my truck) to maximize my profitability.

Welcome to SMF from the Buffalo Commons. It sounds like you have a great plan to start your business venture. Be careful, scrapping could become addicting as well as this web site. To maximize your profits you might want to read through the old threads. There is a lot of good information buried in them. In the upper right hand corner of this page is an advanced search bar. Good luck to you.

There is a lot of opportunity in our state. Just let everyone you meet know what you are doing. It is very common for me to leave work and find more in the bed of my truck than when I arrived at work. All because people know what I do. It would appear that you might favor the "other school" rather than the Wildcats. Stick with your plan and you will quickly pay for that trailer.

Thanks for the replies everyone! We just had a big town festival and I took my son out collecting cans this morning. My wife even joined in and both of them had fun. Altogether we collected almost four 13 gallon trash bags full of cans and it only took about 30 minutes. I'm hoping that with my connections in the construction industry I can have a good source of scrap as well. My brother owns a home remodeling business, one of my friends owns a roofing business, and another works for a company that does siding and gutters. I've already learned a lot from looking at the threads on the forum and I will keep reading to learn more.
Numbers, the "other school" that I favor is Pitt State. I'm a proud graduate :).
