I help a friend pick up scrap but never had a job on my own. I see a listing locally and seller doens't know what material it is. they say it's iron which isn't worth the $100 for the 800 pounds but could it be anything valuable? a pic of the material is my avatar. they are 30 year old weights in a home gym
Like wine as weights age they add more value, offer the guy $40 and see what you get. If they are old They could have some vintage value but other than that scrap metal price is what you would get. And if you get them It is likely he may have other stuff he wants to get rid of, but you have to ask if he has other metal or electronic items that he may want to get rid of while you are here!
Welcome to our little corner of the world. As far as the material they made out of, it could be steel or cast iron. A lot of the Olympic weight sets are cast iron. I would not invest in them for scrap and this seller is selling them for more than scrap.
Please take the time to introduce yourself and read the old threads. You will find items like this can produce more than scrap value.

take it from me- theyre not antiques- ppl still use them daily in many gyms all over the US & the rest of the world
the weights are valuable to those who need more weights/plates at their gym
you wont make a huge profit but u do need patience & room to store it until u get a buyer.
if u cant manage that, then last resort is to sell it to a scrap yard
if i was nearby, i would have taken it myself.
They are just regular scrap iron. Nothing super special but you have something nice, I wouldn't scrap them.
It's nice compact - so worth having - Buy at a lower price then short steel
Work out weights could be sold to some body
some weights with popular names are collected but I don't know the names
Just pay under short per # these days shorts around $160 GT
I'd never pay $100 after all you see your interest is as scrap
other then your interest seems no body else is going for it .
Still a trip to wall mart or a gym supply store & $100 is a great price for work out weight's
for true need .

Free weights can be sold at a local resale store. Specifically if you have one of those "play it again" stores that deal in used sports equipment. Typical price will be at least double scrap price.
