CRT's (yep)!

So around here you can dispose of CRT TV's and monitors in with your garbage. I have broken down some over the years after Goodwill stopped taking them. I said I would no longer take them as I could not dispose of them in a better manner. Well lately a new smash and grabber guy has been going crazy with them. Before some may have gotten smashed but others were removed from the alley. Heck you can still sell CRT's here at yard sales for a few $ as people take them to Mexico. We have a big portion of yard sale folks that load up there trucks and then re sell stuff south of the border. I think I may start taking them when I see them, remove the good stuff and then dispose of the rest in the trash vs. having that ass make a mess and leave the smashed tube on the ground :mad:

Too often we see old televisions dumped in the desert or in alleys or vacant lots. This is potentially harmful to the environment and any humans or animals who may be exposed to the broken glass. If your old television will fit in your trash container, you can put it in with your regular household trash. If you don't have room, please bring to the City's HHW Program so it can be properly disposed of. We live in a beautiful desert so please do your part and Know Where to Throw.

So I called the place that used to do the electronics recycling for the city. He said garbage can or the landfill (and pay landfill fees). So stupid!

Here are our landfill fees...
• Residential Rates
• Any covered load 2000 pounds or less $15 (Effective July 1, 2011)
• Any covered load more than 2000 pounds $32 per ton
• Uncovered loads will be charged an additional $5
• Tires, $2 each (passenger tires only), in addition to any other applicable fees
• Special handling, $42/ton with $75 minimum*
• Large carcass disposal, $75/ton with $75 minimum
• Disposal of appliances designed to use refrigerant, $5 per appliance in addition to other applicable fees
• The only acceptable forms of payment for residential rate customers are Cash, Visa, Mastercard and Discover.
• Heavy loads (any load greater than 2000 lbs.) may be required to leave a cash security deposit. Credit Cards will not be accepted for security deposits. Cash only.
• Household hazardous waste, $10/load for non-city residents

And scrap yards here take Freon items as is for no fee and pay you for them!!!

My county has drop off locations. I think the current contract they have goes until September. I have been considering picking up some CRTs also since I have a place to recycle them. Still not sure it is worth the trouble. BUT, the neighboring county with a large city has no CRT program. I could get as many as I want there. Still, probably not worth it. IDK

This is crazy because California was the reason that all electronics had to change their practice to use less lead in manufacturing. Now their okay with just landfilling all of tha lead? Sad.
It doesn't seem that separating the lead and glass would be that hard. They have vastly different melting temperatures.

The problem with CRTs isn't that it can't be done. It's that it doesn't pay for most companies

On the topic of smash-and-grabbers... it seems every time I see a tube TV smashed open & the yoke broken off the tube, the degaussing cabling is still sitting inside there. A quick run through my wire stripper and all that copper goes into my bucket!

Out of curiosity, what type of wire stripper do you use for the degaussing cables? I've gotten ok at using just a box cutter, but it would be nice to have a wire stripper that would work. The way the tape is wound seems to be the problem.

Run it through, making sure to cut the tape completely, then it usually just peels right off, maybe two or three pieces at the worst.

I found that if I just use a boxcutter to cut thru the double layer of tape, where the side cable with the plug on the end meets the degaussing cable, and remove it.
I have to cut the Copper wire at its ends to remove the soldered part anyway.
Remove all of that bit of tape and the insulated wire/solder and leave a little bit of a slice into the main piece of tape.

Then I pull out a couple of strands of the varnished Copper wire and use it to cut thru the tape insulation.
I can pull out those strands and cut thru the side of all of that tape.

Sometimes the two (twos good, maybe three, more or less and it breaks or snags) will snag another wire and pull it out. I just pick out another two straight untwisted two wires and keep going.

Short of using a proper insulation stripper, this is the quickest method I have found.

I bought the same one years ago. Worked great! My volume is too high to mess with stripping but I keep the device around "just in case" :)

I just couldn't resist hanging onto degaussing cables, jumper cables, and other THICK cabling and finally spent a weekend last month stripping three tubs of such material. Other than that, though, yeah, I don't use it much. Lamp cord, extension cords, etc, I just don't think it's cost effective time you weight the wire, figure out what it's worth whole, then weigh the resulting copper and add in the time spent stripping and all the beers it takes to get through three tubs of cables! ;)
