Lucky day today - on the way back home some dumpsters net me around 800 to 900 pounds of product
funny thing when you get used to your truck and associate the scale & the feel of truck , you start to
recognize the feel of 500 # 800 # and so on but then there is the over load to the bump stop
then you just know it's too much !!
Estimating weight on a truck always worked for me on half and three quarter ton trucks, I favored the Ford and ugly as sin International trucks that had leaf springs some early Chevy trucks had coil springs and those trucks sucked.Quote:

Once hauled a counter weight from a fork lift to a small yard that did not have a lift large enough to get the load off the truck, which was grossly overweight.
One ton trucks are tricky try to judge the weight of a load and three tons are impossible.
Highway trailer ( semi ) if they have air bag suspension you can read the gauge if the trailer is hooked up to the tractor.
My partners deceased husband had a logging truck equipped with electronic scales, you can put these scales onto any type of truck or trailer combination..

Some (the older ones ) use small copper piping wound around the water storage tank or basin
the freon flows in the piping . This one and most newer ones use low cost steel
(not copper) Naturally the Freon is a concern .The yard deals with it in the area that they dismantle cars .
As with any recycling procedures some might get past them due to the massive daily loads .
If you noticed towards back of truck near water cooler is a round steel thing it was the bottom ( I cut off)
of the thing towards the front laying on it's side . It was so heavy . The base had a 1/2 inch thick
round 2 feet 7 inches steel plate . I cut the weld points out and saved the the round plate , it's so heavy
I'm gonna see if a gun shop wants it for a target. Gotta be worth more then scrap .
The odd looks I get from people as I drive to the yard never ends . Yet This is what $70 bucks looks like

I also drive slow 25 mph to 40 open road

I would have killed for shelving units like that, last year !
