Prices currently being paid for scrap steel

I am wondering if I was to scrap a load of appliances less wire, motors and misc parts and pieces and then later sell a load of scrap iron such as truck spindles should I get the same scrap price per pound or are the steel categories priced separately?. I think the yard I sell to has tried to lump everything in to one to save time since prices are so low. I think that would be good for them but not for the guy trying to survive the dive in scrap prices. I do know lately the guy has wanted to combine dirty and clean brass paying the same price for both. I declined to do so opting to hoard the stuff for a while and try then another yard. :)

Every scrap yard is different, just like the individuals that sell to them. I would find a different scrap yard if the one you use is paying the same regardless of material. My scrap yard will pay the same for # 1 and # 2 at certain times. Appliances go as shred around here, truck spindles as # 1. I assume in your location, there is a great deal of competition.

There has been a great deal of debate on the forum between hording and selling at the current price. If you have the room, finances, time, and resources you could horde for better prices. It might be a couple of years before prices rebound. This is the strategy I am following, but my sons may have a big mess to clean up.

At least you will leave them with f2fthe skills and equipment to deal with it.

Yards around here used to always pay peddlers sheet iron price no mater what they brought in steel wise, then about 3 years ago a new place opened up paying different grades of steel now most of the other yards do as well.

Most places now have

Sheet Iron
Clean Sheet Iron
Torch P&S
Prepared

So now I have to have more piles of stuff around here! LOL Lately as steel has been sitting in alleys for awhile before it gets picked up due to low prices, you can generally leave it for a few days. I then fill up what I have around the house and get the rest on the way to the scrapyard.
