Hi!
Just wondering on thoughts on scrapping using a bike and one of those trailer like things you haul on it. I lost my license a while ago for a few months due to me driving like a moron and one thing leading to another. Id really enjoy getting back into the scrapping world!
But i was thinking of focusing more or less on e-waste since these bike trailers arent really all that big.
It could work, but a lot of work for a min, amount you will be able to haul. Maybe think of a way to get scrap/ewaste dropped off to you. I get as much dropped off to me as I pick up. Free ads, facebook, twitter, craigslist. With the understanding they will drop off. I know A LOT won't do that, but worth a try!
Cut cords as you go, it all adds up. You could build a bigger bike trailer with stuff you find. Unfortunately not sure how much good ewaste you will find on a bike. And worst case if you do find a computer then just off load some steel or aluminum to make room. A good chance it will still be there when you go back as prices are so low!
With these low prices it hard find a profit on a bike. Empty beer cans a dirty liquor jugs would be better then scrap all day long
I have been scrapping ewaste for about 14 months. During that time, in my travels for both work and personal stuff, I have only found 3 towers and one laptop curbside. I'm not sure if the fact that New York state has made it illegal to throw away electronics makes my numbers lower than in other locations. I really just think that people don't throw away computers unless they are taking them to a trusted drop off location.
You would need to run the free ads as suggested or make some good contacts to make it work. I would love to here about your adventures if you do pursue it. As they always say, where this is a will there is a way.
I just did a quick google search and saw some pics of people with bikes and trailers. Some looked expensive but most were home made but very functional. Sounds like a plan until you get your license back.

I've been doing this for 4 years plus one year doing the curb shopping route and you've got me beat already. I only found one tower curbside all this time. As for the state making it illegal to place electronics out on the curb for trash collection, it hasn't stopped folks from putting CRT TVs out. That leads me to think most folks don't know about the ewaste laws. I have to admit I've been wondering if anyone has been fined yet.Quote:

Then you turn the corner and a 60 year old out board motor and a pressure washer and two doors down had a bag o 60lbf Xmas lights....then nothing for a few days....6 months later sold it for 350 bucks and the washer traded if for an .22. I rather gamble 20 bucks in diesel then 100 and the casino or lotto ticket....yes the winter months sucks I'll agree to that. It's always garbage day somewhere 5 days a week
Nope. Never had that kind of luck.
If you are making a bike trailer, use pushbike tyres.
I used a little trailer made for towing behind a sit in lawnmower, the tyres were small dia (1 foot dia ?) and that made it far too tough to tow.
I actually had to pedal hard to go downhill..... Anything uphill I had to get off the bike and push.
Right now I'm making another one from a small fridge casing, two bike wheels, 2 Ali scooter chassis to give the sides some strength (vertical, pop riveted on) and two front forks to hold the wheels, one side of the fork fits into the underside slot of the Ali scooter chassis.
At the moment, I had started on another fridge casing (a year or more ago) and that rusted out. Soon I took it part last week and got another fridge casing (bigger/lighter/stronger) to start on.
I think I will have to do some welding on it. Initially I wanted to have no welding and make it out of 'unworked' parts only.
The towbar is a satellite dish arm bracket. I have seen another trailer with this idea.
Those jigging strollers /bike trailers are mint. ....just make a longer hitch. We use them for moving canoes
It's good exercise.
