A Bet between Farrar and I

One day we were watching a show called Junkyard Empire and saw that they bet ever so often on things (like if they can restore a vehicle and sell it a certain price). So Farrar had made a comment on how we should see who can get the most cars in.

We both agreed on to see who gets to 100 cars first and the first person to get to 100 cars would get $1,000 out of the other. We both have the same price range $100 if incomplete (no engine or transmission basically nothing) and $200 if complete (all parts or almost all). We both service the same area and we have to pay towing out of pocket (due to not having a tow truck).

I currently have 3 Vehicles. I take the vehicles and post them on Facebook for parts and take them off as I need to or the person comes in by themselves and take it off.

Just scrapped a 2001 expedition that had a good engine. You could have bought that and put it in the one you have. Got $450 for it and still have the cats, pre-cats, aluminum rims and 4 good tires to sell.

just wondering how much are you paying for a wrecker to drop off the cars to you? how do you take your scrap in?

what's up with the body on the ion? looks like spray can flat black? or is it plastic dipped?

looks like you got a decent few cars that have desirable parts

Ahh the Plastic-Coat.. I'm rehabbing an apt and across the driveway this dumba$$ was spraying down his $500 Honda Civic with Black Plastic-Coat literally 2 feet from my WHITE $50,000 van.. I Darn near caught an assault charge that day!

As for towing that varies from $75 to $225 depending on distance. We service all the way down to Machias Maine and all the way up to Houlton Maine area. I have several more cars coming in at the end of week on top of these. But the average towing bill is around $100 each. As for scrap most of it comes in inside the cars or I get it from site clean ups for Free and haul it in either by borrowing a friends truck or using the car or if my cousin has his car carrier at the job site he also hauls for me.

The ION was painted flat black but was spray painted tonight purple, white, and a few other colors due to so much rust nothing outside or underneath could be saved. Most of the cars had a good amount of parts available excluding one and the jeep and blazer have had alot of attention. The Ford Expedition wasnt listed on craigslist or Facebook groups yet but will be soon as I get it drained and the converters removed. The front tires on it are brand new and the back are in excellent shape with a almost new full size spare as well.

All the vehicles pictured plus the ones coming in soon will be crushed by AIM Recycling from Bangor Maine in a few weeks. They drain the vehicles for us and remove any converters we couldnt get when they arrived and haul them to saint john in Canada for shredding.

I was just wondering about trailers and such.... just doing the math... If it was possible to have a truck'/ trailer to haul some of these cars.... Cause I'm figuring that if you both are shooting for 100 cars a piece even at $75 delivered for 100 cars you are at about $7500... thus $4500 for your truck/trailer and 3000 for gas (and could go up from there) & just figure if you are multiplying it to 200 that's at a 9000 truck/trailer and 6000 for gas... roughly... also how do you get them to the yard to get paid....

What makes this worth while for you? verses having your own truck may I ask?

Also IDK how much time you have or that.... but I know 1st hand on the weight of the Saturn plastic, would it be worth your time pulling the body panels and setting on it to sell to some one that needs a fender or that to paint (This is what I have now.... panels upon panels of parts Saturns... thus my name)

I used to have my own car carrier but the cab rusted out beyond repair and parts were getting so hard to get for it due to an accident in December with it (car tried passing when I was pulling into the drive way and got sucked into the front wheel on the drivers side totaled the car out, no injuries and was never reported by the sheriffs department to the FMCSA) I am looking at buying another ramp truck soon as I can my cousin offered me his old one for at a discounted rate but now its just coming up with the money for it. As for towing we have been using them for about 4 years now and we make enough off the converters since we sell them direct to the decanner / precious metals lab so we can pull every gram of precious metal out of them direct same place buys and picks up all our aluminum rims, batteries, starters, alternators, and radiators so we never have to leave.

We have AIM Recycling pickup all the metal right onsite with the cars when there out to crush them down. It cost about $8000 to crush everything due to transport cost from Topsfield Maine to Saint John for shredding but we get the Canadian price per ton. The saturn everything has to go with the car due to the amount of rust and we only get thirty days to crush from the time the first car arrives on the lot. Each car will be stripped as much as possible but most will go with alot of parts still on them. We use the car to bring scrap wire, any aluminum rims not worth keeping on hand for recore trading in New Hampshire, and any other non ferrous we get in to Bangor and East Millinocket.

As for owning a truck and trailer I dont have enough cash on hand to buy a used truck with the prices people want around here since our inspection program is the worst in the country at this time and everything is rusted out around here to the point it cant pass anymore. Same goes for our trailers even with no inspection but the DOT # is still required on the pickup since I register them at 12000+ lbs each and Maine has a law requiring a DOT #, time cards, (no log books or medical card required if within 100 air miles under the Maine state law), state commercial inspection, and a federal commercial inspection, etc... are all required which take to much time to do.

I know the towing seems high to most people but its just a regular cost of doing business in our area when you live over 100 miles from the nearest city and the closes trucks for sale are over 150+ miles alone that are worth buying and own a car the wont make it much longer due to mechanical and the inspection almost up and to much rust to pass it again.

Just to update the thread some. We recently got rid of the 4 pictured (one sold and the other three were bought by my cousin for scrap). We have recently added a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 and a 2003 Subaru Legacy to the lot. The dodge was complete but rusted right out and was totaled in the front, the legacy came in with no suspension, no tires and rims, and was rolled a few years ago.

In your state, how many licenses do you need to start?
Down here in PA, the legal end of the business is a nightmare!

Can't speak to the licenses, but our motor vehicle inspection program is just awful. Causing problems like you wouldn't believe. It's too much to go into here, but i think i spent close to two years reaching out to the different branches of state government. I detailed everything out so that they could understand. At the end of the day, i believe everyone could see that the program has grown out of control but they couldn't agree on a solution. Nothing got done.

The solution was always simple ..... Grow a pair, make the hard choice, take the heat from those who believe that more state regulation is always a good thing.

For licensing its getting harder and harder with each passing year. Up here we have a yearly local junkyard permit, state recycler license, Maine DEP Industrial Storm Water Permit and in some cases local business licensing we have to deal with. Maine is the worst state I have had to deal with and im licensed in West Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, and were adding Kentucky on soon.

Here im licensed under a 5 year Auto Recycler Permit but that is even worse to get up here. Dealing with the towns the public has the say weather your approved or not if someone dosent want you to open there the selectmen have the option of going with that neighbor says over the evidence in front of them showing your in full compliance with MRSA 30 3751-3760 of the Maine Junk Yard Control Act of 1965 last revised 1988 and 2005.

As for the inspection i will keep my mouth shut on that since I dont have anything good to say about it. But I will agree with Scrappah it has gotten out of hand. I cant even pass with a 2005 chevy impala due to rust and in this area all the cars with newer stickers in them for junk everyone takes the stickers out before we get to drain them for there own vehicles even tho its illegal to display a sticker issued to another vehicle.

Indiana years ago had a inspection program and it seemed it was crooked as all get out. Only certain garages could inspect and one would pass the vehicle and another one would fail them. And they would recharge you to inspect again after fixing. There was a class action filed and Ind. ended up disbanding the inspection program.

Moral of the story, don't pee off some rich folks that feel they've been wronged.

It may be even worse when you piss of the working class folks. Here in Maine they elected a very conservative man to the Governor's office as a counterbalance to 40 years of *ahem* progressive growth from the legislature. Now there are a lot of very unhappy people on both sides of the aisle.

That pattern may repeat itself on a larger scale next fall.

The thing with the inspection system is that it's a complicated situation. The basic idea of a yearly inspection is a good one. The problem is that there were more than a few lawsuits brought against the state because their inspection program wasn't comprehensive enough.

You know how it goes .... Someone that may be lacking in common sense hops into a car that really isn't fit to drive. There is a mechanical failure, they perish in the crash, and their family files a wrongful death lawsuit against the state. The family wins, the payout is in the millions, and they have to tighten up the inspection regulations to cover anything and everything that could ever possibly go wrong.

The inspection mechanics are freaked because their first violation is a fine of about two weeks take home pay. A second violation can earn them some time in prison. Now they're reluctant to put a sticker on a vehicle that's over ten years old. What they do is come up with a long list of violations and explain that it will cost far more than the car is worth to fix it.

So .... the poor schmuck that's barely making ends meet has to go take out a bank loan to buy an 8,000 dollar used car that will pass for a sticker so he can get back and forth to work every morning. Now he can't pay for the health insurance that the law requires him to buy so he ends with a debt to the IRS and they slam him with interest & penalties.

Sheesh .... what a cluster**** !

I feel for you guys in heavily regulated states. SD used to have annual inspections when I first started driving but in Wild Bill Janklow's 1st term back around 1980, he got the legislature to do away with it and people of the state have never looked back. I don't know what it takes to buy junked vehicles, the state certainly wants a cut out of any economic activity, but I'm sure its not too crazy unless some sort of special interest deal has been made and no one really saw it or cared about it. South Dakota has a messed up honey bee hive locating law. It doesn't matter if you have hives there now but if you've had hives at a specific location at any time during (not sure of the years but its a long time), you get to control the bee "air space" in a 2 mile radius in any direction. If the state finds you guilty of such a violation, they can make you forfeit your honey. So the big guys (and there is a little honey cartel in the state) move their hives around a lot and control large swaths of the state for their own honey production. Personally, I think it would be a great Supreme Court test to see get done, don't know if its ever been challenged in our state supreme court...

OK, I stand corrected a bit. If you own the land and want to put hives on it, no one else can stop you. But if another party wants to place hives on your property and you want to make a little coin or honey by charging rent, then you may be in violation if someone else has had hives in the area.

Ummm .... i dunno .... this is a little sketchy. This is just my point of view:

There are many different kinds of government. My best understanding is that we have a (representative)democracy. The people vote and choose someone to speak for them in the legislature. It's the legislature's job to write laws and steer public policy.

Next ... we have the executive branch of government. It's their job to put those laws & policies into effect.

This is where it gets to be a problem. You get different departments or "bureaus" within the executive branch. They propagate regulations on beekeeping or the specifications for a motor vehicle inspection or any of a host of other things. The regulations they write carry the force of law. If you break their rules you get a fine or go to jail.

This is where it gets kinda narfed up. The executive branch doesn't have the authority to make law. That's a different form of government called bureaucracy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a well run bureaucracy but as far as i know that form of government isn't allowed under the constitution.

At the very least, the legislature should be given the opportunity to vote on any proposed regulation changes before they go into law. It may be that this is being done in every single case of new law going into effect but i doubt it. The executive branch may be overstepping it's bounds.

If you've ever served, or taken the oath "to support & defend", this is what it was all about.
