Craigslist alteratives
Some friends of mine have had some luck with a couple smart phone apps
Offerup, and letgo. So far, there seems to be a better quality of responses, and they both have chat built in.
Feel free to add other alternatives, so we can keep them all in one place

VarageSale is nice - have bought and sold various things on there. There are sub-communities in the app, usually geared toward one town/area/county, etc. (ie, if you live or work within 30+/- miles of the place, they will let you join). The one for where I live is well-managed and has been easy to use and full of plenty of interesting items. It has a built-in messaging system, and you can use it as a device app or access it through Facebook (but you have to check the messages separately in the app, they are not delivered via any of the main FB notifications).
