Identification of Scrap - Price and Quality

Hi All,

I would highly appreciate if experts can identify what category or classification of Scrap is this in the Attached Picture. I know that its HMS-1 but is there any further information i am missing regarding its classification.

Also i need to know, how can i judge its quality? What price per ton should i pay for it? I am based in Toronto, Canada.

simply go and check it out or take the gamble either way you will learn what you need to lol

From what I see first pic #1HMS, second #2 bales might goe as a #1 tho last #2HMS. that's how we sell our's.

How do you determine the quality for this? Also on average, how much would it cost in the market per ton?

Also, how do you determine the quality of HMS1?

If its scrap, it will be melted down so quality does not matter. For the first picture, HMS, the length and weight is all you need to know. If the pieces are under 3' x 3' and at least 1/4" thick then it should be considered #1 HMS prepared. You have to call the scrap yard for their price per ton.

The reason why i ask is because the buyer in his tender specifically mentioned that he wants top notch quality, and will reject any quotations if the quality is not good.

This is why i was confused.

I guess I would take that (top notch) as clean of contaminates. No plastic, not excessively dirty, 100% iron.

i sell my empty computer cases and microwave covers as clean light iron..3$a hundred lbs...they bale it...no plastic or wires allowed...CLEAN

Yep we have a clean sheet iron category here as well and they have a bale maker.

Sheet iron $45 net ton or $.0225 lb.
Clean Sheet Iron $65 net ton or $.0325 lb.

I am not cleaning my steel as much as I am separating it out, a few screws to remove to remove some plastic to make it clean sheet iron then fine. Other times I may make more with the plastic or wood attached depending on item...

And keep the prepared steel separated from the rest as well!

Meet with the buyer to go over their specific requirements. I suggest a tour of their facility.

Pricing can be affected by size and frequency of shipments

Just a FYI - that pile of metal bits is worth far more than scrap price ---
The I-Beams go for $2 to $5 per foot of 'good' metal ...
The angle iron is also worth more than scrap if it's good metal ...
The pipes can be sold for more than scrap if they are good ...
Good "square stock" is not cheap ...
Even the unbent rebar is worth more than $0.04 a pound !
