I have to say its funny reading about stupid people but also partly sad because it makes our business harder kind of like tv smashers when it was worth while to pick them up

Alloy2 - I hope this is appropriate to add to your thread, dishonesty is just what it is BAD! As always I feel most people are honest, hardworking and try to do the right things for themselves and others. As your thread demonstrates, that dishonesty and profiting at the expense of others, causes all of us problems. Those that steal, cheat and defraud will almost always get caught and when their activity is fully exposed, they are not only criminals but, "Stupid" criminals.
They do us all wrong, Damage is done and at great expense to the majority that work hard to make a honest living. The scrap industry unfortunately has been labeled "dirty", for many reasons. These outright criminals make it even harder for the majority of us that know, there is no easy money in the scrap business. Educating ourselves we can work smarter, so that our work is profitable, gratifying and recognized as needed by all!
We cannot and should not tolerate a "bad scrapper", should not be tolerated at any level. A thief stealing cooper from a construction sight, a bus thief and yard owner working together for "fast money", are one in the same, a STUPID CRIMINAL.
Bad scrappers are everywhere, sometimes stealing for just small gain and sometimes for millions of dollars. I pointed out a case here in California on another thread that was about CRV fraud. This one case is yet another example of bad scrappers, this involved many people, all of them knew it was not legal. Some making a little "fast money" and a handful of yard owners making millions of dollars. Who paid the most for their crimes?
Here is just a paragraph about this California CRV fraud case: Officials also say more than a dozen private recycling centers in Southern California are on the hook for playing a part in the scam, because they accepted the Arizona recyclables. Though all centers are responsible for determining where a container came from, in this case those involved were operated by or in cahoots with the fraud ring, CalRecycle noted.

People who do that type of thing are a disgrace not only to scrappers, but to the human race. I have no use for anyone that steals from someone else.
Just read about the recent scrapyard busts in Columbus Ohio. These idiots working at the yards bought grave markers and electrical stuff from the power company clearly marked. You can't fix stupid. A simple google search will turn up the story.
The California CRV fraud case I sited, was not small time scrappers. This case involved yard owners, trucking companies and their operations were in three states. In just two years it is estimated $14 million was made by the five men indited, all five owned scrap yards. Only four have been sentenced to prison terms, the longest for two years and the shortest time was for ten months. Restitution fines of $1.4 million (largest fine) and $250,000 was the smallest fine. One owner is now a fugitive and until he is captured, probably living it up on millions of dollars he pocketed. In this case, the five ring leaders made millions, their prison sentence and restitution fines was just a "cost of doing business".
The overall investigation lead to major changes in CRV recycling at the scrap yard. A yard I used to do business with was one of twenty recycling centers that loss their CRV certifications (four others voluntary with drew). I now sell directly to a certified CRV processor and no longer sell CRV beverage containers at a scrap yard/recycling center. Who paid and loss the most for the criminal activity of a few "stupid criminals"? All residents of California will pay for it, the small scrap yards, most of them family businesses, that were already having a hard time making a profit, will pay with the loss of revenue a CRV certification can generate.
While all of this is clearly making us look bad, it's also showing how desperate both scrappers and scrap yards are getting. If a yard's desperate for volume, their likely to waiver checks to get it - likewise, if a scrapper becomes desperate for money, they'll likely turn to crime to get it. The whole thing's a giant game of roulette tbh, but agree that there is no excuse for bad business practice/bad scrappers.
