Had my 16ft flatbed loaded and ready to go last Friday. Called the yard I frequent to see what they were paying for shred, hoping it did not fall further from its $40 a ton it had been sitting at for a few weeks. Very pleasantly surprised when he said "$70 a ton". I know this is just a short lasting blip, but hopefully I can get another load or two taken in before it re-adjusts.
Makes me wonder if scrap prices are correlated to gasoline prices in some way. I've been actively scrapping since September (Louisville, KY) , and gas has been been going down steadily the whole time to the lowest point in years. During this period, scrap prices have gradually been bottoming out. Around Thanksgiving, gas suddenly jumped up 15 - 20 cents, I assume for the holiday season. But if scrap prices rise as well, I wonder if they are related.
Your yard is filling cars with shred and crushing them, I can pretty much guarantee this is the reason for the increase. The auto shredder places are paying a premium on cars right now to keep their shredders going.
I turned in my #1 iron at $80/ton very recently. I was surprised and happy with that price. But a little bummed that all my good iron is gone.
I have to admit I'm a little confused. One of our buyers on this board just updated his prices with a drop of between 10 to 20 cents per pound for the higher grade boards. Just a few minutes ago I received a text from Weitsman that they are raising prices on all metals starting tomorrow. I always assumed the prices would rise and fall in tandem. Can anyone shed light on why board prices are dropping while scrap prices are rising?
I think the precious metals market and ferrous and nonferrous markets are independent of each other. Thats my 2 cents worth.
it's the end of December! some yards are trying frantically to fill orders to get material off their books so it does not get taxed on the first as an asset,
SELL Now if your yard has a spike, because when the orders are filled, the prices will drop instantly to retail or lower, no special deals, they dont want anything after the last truck has left for the year.
and yes that means prices will drop instantly for no reason you can tell because it has to do with the yard you are selling to's books, not the market, not China, not LME/COMEX

After the first of the year, I expect things to fall pretty quickly. This included some E-Waste
Boys if you want to stay scrapping then be ready to scrap with these low prices for the next year minimum.
There are alot of guys out of it already because they where the fly by nighters mostly anyways.Anyone that has done it for awhile can still do it with low prices.
