Old Bank Safe - How To Proceed?

So a buddy of mine had a garage full of goodies for me to take, among them being a heavy duty safe that used to belong in a bank.

The thing weighs every bit of 150lbs.

Of course, it's a keyed lock, and my buddy didn't have a key (hence why he was going to throw it away).

Two things:

1. Should I get a key made for it and try to resell it? (Surely has to be worth something...but getting a key made could run in the area of $50)

2. Or should I turn it in at the yard? Is it just regular steel? (it's magnetic, but wasn't sure if anything special is used for safes).

Any advice or help would be great.

One thing you have to watch out for is... alot of safes has cement/concrete between the outer and inner layers of steel of the safe body.... have to find a way to look in between the layers, whether using a grinder, torch or even drill a hole.

Just from the little bit I can see in the picture, depending on the height it looks like a gun safe you can hang on a wall to put shotguns and rifles in and lock them up, but they do not have concrete in them. Just a thought,,,

Definitely open it to see if there's money inside. I remember reading an article about how a tow truck driver in the NYC area was hired to get rid of a presumed empty safe, dumped it in a vacant lot, then it turned out there was 80 grand in it.

Funny you say that, as I can hear something rattling/moving around in there. Could be nuts and bolts, could be jewelry, coins? I do know 100% that it came out of a bank (friend of the family worked at a bank that was shut down and he got to keep it). I'm not getting my hopes up, but now I'm very curious as to what is inside.

Heck yeah, I'd pop that sucker open and see what's inside...even if it's just air.. Curiosity always kills my cat.

It looks still good to me. Have a key made for it, and re-sell it afterwards. If it's only 150 lbs, you'll get more out of selling it on craigslist I bet.

I would have a key made for it, and if it didn't sell I would keep it for myself. I sold my safe when I moved and don't have one now.

Absolutly sell outright, list it on craigslist Looking at the welds and size you have no problem getting 300. for it as is. I sold a smaller one that was drilled out fo 450. Good Luck

My yard won't take any safe, they right away assumes they have cement. So yes try to sell it..
