Non ferrous buying business in New York

Just curious,

If one would be setting up a copper wire scrap buying warehouse/location in NYC, who would be the high volume suppliers (I don't mean specific company names but generic ones like electrical contractors, construction companies, etc.)?
Does anyone think focusing on copper only would be achievable if trying to buy 20MT or + a month?

Not to sound rude however if you open such a place be prepared for competition from Ben Weitsmann Metal Handling. They have the majority hold on scrap yards in New York at the moment. If you managed to give a higher price then them, I would say you'd be out of business soon.

In NYC, with decent prices, that shouldn't be a problem. If you wind up doing this, you should find something to make you stand out. I know of 2 places that pickup wire. One is in Connecticut and will pick up for free if you have over 100 pounds, anywhere in the state.

I'm a big fan of wietsmann's also, but you need to understand where they are. In the eastern half of new york, they really don't have anything but albany at this time. Nothing in NYC. They do buy from feeder yards out in the eastern area. This will all change, if and when they get the albany shredder running. They do have a port location in new jersey, just across the river from NYC, but that is it.

For copper good industrial accounts are the electricians, demo companies, construction companies, motor winding companies, refrigeration mechanics, auto shops and plumbers. All have worked well for me.

BUT - opening a copper warehouse right now could go one of 2 ways. Considering we are at the lowest level comex since July 2009, now may not be a good time to start. 2. you buy low and sell high (who knows when high will come though)
