What's a diod?
I do recall Mechanic had a thread about capturing the gold plated thingy out of the readers. Maybe if he doesn't chime in here, you can PM him or something.
mind sharing a picture so we know what you're talking about?
yes mac did say he used to pull them. im curious if anyone here might want my stash. i have 2 kids now lol to busy for the small things.
I tried to sell a box full of reader heads on Ebay, kept marking them down but got no bites for them. Good luck there.
Here is some I pulled from a few heads awhile back.

Ummm .... got a bunch of em' myself. They're kinda like gold mylar. Doesn't seem to be a market for them.
If you pull the little gold thingies and scratch test them they appear to be gold plate with a base metal underneath. Usually there are three wires going into them. Those wires might be gold or gold plate. Hard to know if there's enough value there to make them worth processing.
It seems like it was worth a try for the experience but didn't pan out to be worthwhile.
I have a bucket full too.... Theres a couple of tiny Neodymium magnets in each of them.
The sensor eye has a nice looking flat chip inside it with Gold wires. I think they would make nice escrap jewelry.
Maybe some nice prisms and mirrors and the 'burner' CD recorders have a extra laser too.
