My current scrap load. Suggestions?

I stumbled into these forums after searching for companies that buy sorted e-waste. After lurking and reading several threads, I realized that dealing privately and/or locally is sure to pay-off more than shipping my waste off to some company.

Anyways...

Here is what I have:

• Approximately 80 Pentium 4-era complete desktop computers each with 1-2 dimms of ram, hard drive, optical drive, floppy, drive, cpu, motherboard, power supplies, all cables, etc...
• Approximately 30 15-17" CRT monitors.
• An assortment of old expansion cards (NICs, video cards, etc.)
• 1 Dell PowerEdge 1750 server. Not sure how many CPUs or RAM, but its friggin' heavy. I'm sure the majority of the weight of worthless.
• Maybe a few hundred pounds of random cables: Parallel, serial, power

Any ideas?

I've begun stripping down the desktops and removing all electronics from the cases. Not sure if the cases have any value.

I'm not interested in scrapping as a full or part time job, I'm just interested in getting whatever I can from my employers collection of old electronics! Thanks!!!

How have u come to conclusion that selling local is best option?

I came to the conclusion that dealing locally is probably the most economical for a few reasons:

1) I don't really have that "much" e-waste. Maybe ~90-100 lbs of motherboards. ~10-15 lbs of RAM, etc.
2) The monitors are pretty much worthless as far as I can tell. My local recycle centers CHARGE $10/monitor.
3) Really it comes down to shipping costs > waste value.

But maybe I'm wrong. Hence why I'm here.

If you haven't gotten a clue from the other responses I will clarify it a bit more. Most of us who deal with ewaste have come to the opposite conclusion. For me for the past several years shipping to a couple of our member buyers has been great.

I suggest you continue to do more reading and save up your ewaste. Also look for other ways to sell your computer material at better than scrap value. This has been a valuable lesson for you if you learn it. Good luck, Mike

Read Buyers Section. Ohio is close to you so shipping will be good... And I think better pricing than local for most items.

ok I am going to help you...but it should be pretty clear from the MANY threads on here.

boards, CPU, ram, hard drive board...send it off. You will end up paying somewhere in the neighborhood of a WHOLE .30/lb if you use one of the big guys in the buyers section...I am betting that locally you won't get .30 LESS that they pricing...it will be FAR less. YMMV IF you are lucky and have a good buyer. The rest...hard drive, cdrom, power supply, cables...sell locally most likely...cost to ship vs weight isn't good enough until you get a BUNCH where you can ship freight.

If you are bored and want a few bucks...pull them apart...you will get wire, a brown board of 2, and a copper bearing yoke. If you pull these, then put the case back on and take to your local Best Buy...you usually can bring 3-4 per day unless you make arrangements with the manager (take a shot, only things they can say is NO). COST= $0

People ALWAYS tell others on here to check EBAY for pricing on items...look at the SOLDS in the last 30 days. A simple search showed the server selling for $10 or less generally...YOU MIGHT can get a few bucks for some pieces...put a few parts up there and they MAY sell if you actually want to put in the effort for the bit of money

sell local...power cables are higher grade wire than the smaller stuff...sort according to your yard.

There you go...all laid out for you. Assuming you read the threads like you said, most everything was covered for you and past threads had the same suggestions. Last 150 pounds I sent in to Ewasted...$400 (AFTER shipping costs)..locally, would have been 50-70% of that MAYBE.

Also, we have a member who is a freight broker. A good one at that. By good, I mean it's cheap and truck is there when it's suppose to be to pick up. I believe he has a thread in the buyers & sellers classified as well. Example: 1,000 pounds from Kansas to Ohio = $142!!

Check Ebay on the video cards if they work and you're in to that...

I've taken servers apart that are similar to your PowerEdge. You'll want to sell pieces if you can- that isn't worth shipping.

15# of RAM is a nice chunk of money- my last load (To a buyer here on the forum) was at $12.00 per pound, so you'd be looking at $180. You can fit that in a large flat rate box, so even if you don't send anything else in (Which would NOT be efficient at all), you'd be looking at $165 of RAM.

I'd talk to the resident freight broker- it saved me a lot on my last pallet load of E-Waste.

I say put an ad on clist for someone to take everything for free including the monitors cause if your not doing this for real then why waste any more of your time or ours research is not that hard so do it and stop being lazy if you want to make money there is plenty of info on every part on the net ebay here and all buyers will help you. did you take all of this before doing any research and please do just toss monitors in a ditch somewhere that your not will to do the work to recycle

What forum was you reading this stuff, we have some of the best buyers around. and with 80-100lb of escrap plus monitors I'd be setting an appointment to deliver that load. That way you could see for yourself where the money is and how best to break it down. You have a couple of good buyers within a few hours driving distance.

There is pro's and con's about breaking down CRT monitors, read up on them then make up your mind. What works for me may not work for you.
If you'd researched the monitors you'd find that the same buyers would pay you xxx a lb for flatscreens, more if they have their stands. Everything in a computer and other electronics pays something, even the cases.

Wow! I am sorry but I really do not understand all the anger (not talking to any one individual). I mean, yes, the OP has no clue but he states that straight away. And yes, I agree that all of his ideas are wrong and he could easily find the answers by searching the old threads. But do we really help anything with the flaming? I mean, the way I see it, you have 3 better choices. You can chose to help the OP, ignore the thread completely if it bothers you, or you can POLITELY explain how the search function works here. I have seen this happen in so many newbie threads and have tried to stay quiet but frankly I find this sort of behavior to be very rude and uncalled for. Do we aspire to be like the folks over in that "shiny metal forum" that try to chase away every new or inexperienced person that comes along? I certainly hope not...
