Have come across a gold mine while doing some spring cleaning at my work (mechanic shop).
Just was wondering what you guys would do with some of the stuff i acquired.
Got a good 700lbs+ of alternators and starters. Should i separate the or take as is?
Also.. while trimming off insulated.. do you guys leaves connectors on, and take it in as is? (referring to car wiring harnesses).

For me - Starters go "as is"; Alternators - it depends. I tear them apart until I get tired of it and haul in the rest "as is". Car wiring I cut at the connectors. (Don't forget the battery cables)
Starters & alternators go to a core buyer.
I break the alternators and starters down to individual components. Copper, aluminum housing, steel. I have been told that I am losing money when you figure in time to do that. The stators and armatures can be a big time suck.
Once I figure out a better and faster way to get the copper, I am going to patent the idea. J/K
I leave all the ends on insulated except for battery cables, I get the lead separated.

my yard takes wiring harnesses as is, but they may want it different...
Where are you located? If you're not too far away i'll buy the starters and alternators.
Same here. If you're close, I'll buy them as is & take them on my annual road trip to the core buyer.

Basically all I do with insulated is... If its solid core, strip it (romex) and battery cables or thick braided wire... strip it anything else goes as insulated..P.s I have a drill powered stripper!
I am located in Ontario Canada... so I doubt it would be worth it to come pick up some scrap :P
Another thing.. The wire out of alternators has a kind of coating.. do most scrap yards care about this or is it still #1?

My copper buyer takes it as #1. Others might vary.
