My stainless lesson

Yesterday, I scrapped out an old milk homogenizer. This was my first stainless experience. Totally stripped the stainless from the steel frame before discovering it was mostly magnetic stainless. OK, no big deal, still have a 200lb plus tub going in. Get the, the guy goes over it with a magnet and one bracket, 3x6x20ga, caught the magnet. I should have yanked it off right then, but the guy said nothing about it. Cashing out, what was .78/lb. became .45/lb. Cost me $92, never again will I make that mistake.

The rest of the ticket goes like this:

Shredable steel.............10.25/lb
#2 copper......................3.15/lb
Yellow brass...................1.95/lb

I've said it before - Lesson learned, you won't make that mistake again. Maybe try taking off your taxes as an "Educational Expense".

I think the true lesson is the unscrupulous way the the guy kept quiet and said nothing and I was led to think I was getting .78/lb. Until it was too late. They snatched that f*€£er up and started working it before we could go back and remedy the problem.

Hate that had to happen. We are all trying to get the most money for all the hard work we do. I have not been doing this long and I have had to stop until I get better. A wise man once told me all that shines is not Stainless. I keep 4-5 scrap yard on speed dial so I will be current on prices. Just remember when buying any metal try to set a goal of what you want to make out of the venture. Include cost, time,gas and helper minus what you sell it for, equals profit. Stainless steel is typically slightly magnetic, and emits a small amount of sparks when struck with a grinder. That's 304 stainless.

I had picked up a BBQ a couple nights ago, 215 lbs of stainless steel after removing about 10 lbs of scrap steel.
