Commodities & SMF

I study the Commodities . From that I get the feel of the economy .

I study the SMF also , from there I see another truth .
The interest of what is being scrapped as of now .
It's seems to me since computer scrappers are still going on about the Biz
it will take a hit of gold @ $300 to shake there world . Substantial weight for scrapping seems
to be also in the post's .

The smaller curb co's scrappers are here but there conquest don't fill the post any more . Wile sure it was repetitive for me to read of dismantling items from newbies.

Yet like Commodities - the SMF I can see the curb hunter
is not growing in numbers .the competition is not around .

This may sound weird to some but during the peak sure I had days of over $500 but more often
$100 $150 was sufficient .Hitting $100 or $60 can be still done with a pickup truck .But tomorrow one never knows
But what I see is there are less of my types for now .

I view another truth. Both Gasoline and FOOD prices are down right now...food not nearly as much but I have been noticing the trickle down changes to fuel prices being down so long. For instance, two years ago, around here a dozen ears of corn, gallon of milk and a single 20 oz soda was 10 bucks, today for me... 7.40 that really opened my eyes. So I looked at last weeks grocery receipt and then dug out old receipts until I came across a year old one, sure enough....food really is down (meat not withstanding here guys...).

In this, the dollar gets a little more stretch...not alot but for curb co the price of fuel certainly helps I am sure.

But houses are up around here (this metro never seems to slow down much). I bought my first house (912 sq. ft. on the main floor) in 1996 for $78K. I sold at the height of the recession in Oct. 2008 for $125K. There have been 2 owners in it since 2008. I see that last one just sold. Don't know what the final price was but they had it listed for around $143K. If they got close to the listing price, that would be a 14% increase in 7 years or 2% a year. Nothing to hyper-ventilate about but a solid annual appreciation. Until things take their next dump...

I gamble on , if Commodities stay low long enough then the true new prices develop ,
some times the price of Commodities is a hick up eventually low pricing is truth .
For now Oil then metals are developing to a lower reality

Oil in my opinion will affect copper, aluminum, steel...not so much PMs since fuel isnt an intensive part of the process like copper and bauxite.

To bring politics into the situation just for a minute, if we get someone in office like Bernie Sanders (as an example) who's platform is jobs, education, infrastructure...we might be on track to greater commodity demand, if that happens, PMs may not go down as much as predicted or possibly go up...there is a track record of commodities going up as an election nears but this time I don't think it will.

Fuel prices I do not predict will climb rapidly ever again, small blips here and there sure, but the reality is... China demand for oil went down 30% practically overnight and so did India, meanwhile we are enforcing stricter CAFE standards, putting up more windfarms and building more efficient structures every day. Our own consumptions of fuel are down, so things are looking pretty bright right now.

Where I live shred is at $60CDN/MT - Competition is a fierce as ever, dozens of people out on garbage day, 45 minute line-ups at the scrap yard on weekends.

I just dont get it.

I was going to complain that my shred price dropped to 5.5 cents a pound! I guess I won't now...

With Curbo shoppers not going out so much, the cost to cities and town are going to go up. They are going to be getting more stuff and of course, this "stuff" 's valve had gone down.

Ridiculous. I never understood curbo co but to do it when its 60/mt!? crazt.

I guess for some people its still some money, or food or gas or prescriptions or...

We're at $30/Ton. There isn't much in the way of curbco here.

The large reason here is the distance. If you're close to the yard, and make $50 profit in two hours of work, that's not too bad. You won't get rich, but if it keeps the lights on, puts food on the table, or pays some bills, why not?

I live in what has to be one of the most competitive cities in the country for scrap. It sure has changed in the last year...used to be I generally had to wait at the yard, now it's every other time at best. It's noticeably slower at the yard and they all say it. Piles of yard steel almost don't exist the past month. I live right behind two thrift store dumpsters and other than me and a couple hardcore guys, both who have left for diff reasons, that alley is barren compared to a year ago. I still see people out and about, but it's usually the hardcore day after day scrappers. I won't turn down scrap though I'm not as likely to pick up steel odds and ends. I've moved to doing pallets and have some even bigger ideas for that...and I make way better money with them.

About 50% of the scrap I get is from curb shopping. I can usually pick up 500# in two hours. A lot less competition around these days. I shouldn't say 50% scrap. I resell a lot of things I pick up. I like driving around for pick ups, I amazes me the things people throw away. Can I say grills, grills, and more grills = dirty alum. Always magnet test the grill cover and body.

We need to process out "trash" here and not send it to China. It will soon make no sense to ship it away as prices are falling...
