.6 for the can & the fool I was

Ok it's official & I realize my discovery might not apply to most .
But Crap !! I put focus not to let Cans get away
the effort is minimal especially compared to other aspects of my job
I collect the trash and recyclables . So Crap (I say once more ) I am first discovering
cans - Mon - Tue - wed - cash in hand delivered $90 and I still have more cans to go
and tomorrows rout .
Many things to consider .
1) Redeem centers are abundant / Cans bottles are $$
2) Fuel for me to find returnables is Zero $$
3) Fuel needed to go to a center is no issue ( a 4 mile drive )

So today I made $ 56 fuel cost $2
& I did find 3 vacuums BTW But really I have driven to the yard for $50 and used $8 fuel & count on finding more scrap naturally
sill I found my new - One door opens - as the saying goes .

I'd love to see a video of CH doing his normal job (which I presume isn't at a leisurely pace and has to cover a set amount of territory and clients) while picking & tossing Al cans for his own bags while he goes. Maybe its a bit like an octopus on an energy drink ;):))

Yup - as I go from home to home trash bags are tossed into pick up truck - then 97% of the homes have a clear bag representing
recyclables of the 97% / 95 % have return type bottles and cans in the mix sometimes a few (3) and some as much as 20 and Up , Naturally return types are also in trash bags that I pull out if in sight 1000 to 2000 returnables per week seems to be the modest number.
I expect it to fall off a bit in winter .
As mentioned in the past I find every thing ( typical ) you normally find at the curb including wire . Considering scrap in general is worth .05 # it is clear each returnable is equal to a pound of mix . yet the chances of finding a six cent-ER per customer
is almost guaranteed.

I know I'm on a good path as a super market manager came out to inform me to cease as I hit the limit of 240
I mostly go to return centers but I needed to get rid of a back up that I had in yard .What is happening fast is my new association as to amount of $$ per bag

This is a subject that really grates my nerves. OK, first thing, we don't redeem cans and bottles in NZ.

But the town I am in has a really big problem with glass. It gets put into the recycling bins but theres no way the council can recycle them. Its just not worth it. But, a glass bottle weighs 200grams, the Ali can weighs 15 grams.
If they shifted to only selling Ali canned alcohol drinks, (can't see that happening) or selling alcohol in Ali cans cold (and glass bottles at room temp, of alcopops or beer) they would sell more Ali cans than they do.

Now, thats a automatic increase of recycled Ali cans, and a automatic increase in recycle revenue.

ie, do something and you end up with free money and less expenses....
Now considering that you can fit more Ali cans full of drink into the same space as you can glass bottled drinks, and the cans are lighter by about 185 grams a container, meaning the transport truck can carry a lot more drink in every trip, AND its a lot cheaper to cool down a Ali can drink than a glass bottle drink, in a chiller/freezer AND they take up less space in the retaIl shop, saving even more money, AND glass can be used as a weapon by drunks, Ali cans can't...
And discarded Ali cans clean themselves up, while discarded glass bottles just get smashed on the roads, ruining car tyres and causing injurys......

Why on earth are we using so many glass containers?

Oh, and we have a Aluminium smelter here in NZ. So we should support it anyway. AND, the price of Ali is dropping, making it even cheaper....
While glass is just a expense after expense that must be paid for by everyone, not just the customer.
Our council has huge piles of glass dumped all over the district because the glass is not allowed to be landfilled. At some time all of this is going to have to be retransported to whereever they can figure out to be a proper resting place for it.

I suggest using the clear glass, crushed and screened, as the reflective matter in the white road marking thats painted onto our roads.
And, use green paint for cycle lanes rather than more confusing white paint. Since cycling is a 'green' thing to do. And we could use the green glass in this paint too.

Weirdly, our council was using crushed glass in pavement tarmac untill they got a cheaper contract by a different company, which uses concrete. And we just closed our concrete (the dry powder base) manufacturing plant in NZ...I dunno where they get the concrete base now, probably imported..

But, glean green rant over. Ali is the future, it can be recycled 12 times for a total cost thats the same as manufacturing it in the first place.
ie, you can make 12 Ali cans from recycled Ali for the same cost that it took to make one Ali can from Bauxite, the Ali oxide that Aluminium is made from.

Bauxite has to be processed into aluminum oxide, then the aluminum oxide is smelted to aluminum.

Copper Head - What is the redemption system for containers where you live? Here in California, there is the 0.05 that you are guaranteed to get back at a redemption center. Scrap yards usually pay more than that because of the value of the aluminum as well.

What I'm getting at is are you able to get more than 0.06 each for the cans?

Redemption center's are 06 some 06.5

I will use either
as $1 or $2 loss on a given day is ok - But I mostly use
redemption center's
There is one I need look into If I get a gold card they pay 07 cents

Regardless what I'm doing now is akin to saying - " years ago I should of save this metal item or that metal item"
well when I started my job I should of been better tuned to the opportunity of deposits
