Scrapping in NC

Hey! I'm Hopper. I decided to start scrapping about a week ago. Slow going as of yet, but I'm pretty pleased with the potential of the whole thing. Might make some flyers tomorrow.

I've mostly been finding tvs. People in this town throw tvs away like they're newspapers. I found three at one dumpster the other day. TVs are everywhere I go. Right now the amount of time I spend breaking them down is ridiculous, but I figure speed comes with practice. I live in a tiny basement apartment and drive a minivan... but I'm making it work. Haha, my living room is full of tv remains. Cables and copper and aluminum and magnets everywhere! My roommate's awesome about it though. Actually... I should probably do the dishes.

I'd like to do scrapping full time, but until I build up some contacts I'm working elsewhere. Honestly scrapping is probably one of the funnest things I've ever done for money. In the past I've worked on a farm, played music, been a barista, massage therapist, sales person... With scrapping I feel like I've finally found my thing. Just have to make it pay the bills and I'll be set. This site has been really helpful with that, actually.

BTW... does anybody know how to get the circuit board off the back of a tv (the one that attaches to the glass) so you can slide the yoke off the tube without breaking the vaccuum? It really freaks me out every time.

Welcome from Upstate New York. Use the search feature. Lots of older posts on TVs. Most people are not breaking them down anymore because it is tough to get rid of that leaded glass. Good luck and I hope this new venture serves you well.

ok here is how...you GENTLY wiggle it back and forth (DO NOT TWIST)...it will come off. Some are attached with something, so look underneath the board 1st and clip away any zip ties or other things. Again do it gently, but with a bit of force and it will come off. then unscrew the 2 retaining metal rings, pull or cut off the 4 or so plastic things on the yoke. Gently but forcefully twist the whole yoke from the bottom and it will come loose...work it up and off the tube and off you go.

Once you do a few it gets easier. Screw casing back on and find a dropoff for the tube (Goodwill (some), Best Buy (2-3 a day typical limit) or you might have a drop off in your city for free (not many do this, but some have it)

I will say, that is not alot of money in general for the weight and size of those to go out of your way (IMO) to get them. Computers...much more in terms of $$ for space and time...again IMO. I only do tube tv's if I HAVE to in order to get other stuff and even then I limit it to 36" or less...really 27" or less LOL

The little circuit board is on a plug-in socket with the back of the tube. The yoke will have rubber cushens glued up in 4 spots and maybe a spot of epoxy and 2 "hose clamps. Use a magnet on those clamps. Usually one is all stainless and the other is usually stainless with a regular bolt.

I would be careful bringing them into your house.

One day you're going to take the back off of a TV and roaches or spiders are going to be everywhere.

He's just starting out. TV are more then fine to start with.

Do a search here on tv's. Plenty of posts on how to get the most out of them. You problem will be in disposal. Do it right or don't do it, all I got to say on TVs.

We all have to start somewhere, an the lower end electronics are a fine place. Not much money in it, but you'll get some learning, an hands on experience. Combine that with researching here an reading threads, an you can do just fine. Plenty of folks come here an never go beyond being a part time scrapper, or a hobbyist. An there ain't a thing wrong with that.

Perhaps sharing your Location in NC would help, quite a few of us here. ;)

This needs repeating. Not only what Jimi there said but also, if your bringing in furniture, or anything else always keep an eye out for pests. Learn to look for the really small kind..like bed bugs. I know there are several helpful threads on this topic, so..read them folks. Trust me, you don't want to deal with a bed bug incident. A buddy of mine is going through this, he rents a trailer to two of friends, one of them likes to yard sale, well he brought home a nightstand table for his room...an they are now having to debate thounsands in treatment or attempting to do it themselves an all the fun that comes with that.

It's costly an can be easily avoided if you know what to look for. Same with, mice, roaches, etc. Most of this game is scrapping something, but you also get to wear the pest control hat at times to. Keep your eyes open out there, nobody wants to find out they have bed bugs, or 10,000 black widows living in their home cause they forgot to check for egg sacks in a computer tower.

I agree about the TV's. There's nothing wrong with scrapping them if you have a legal way to get rid of the tubes. I use to scrap monitors but goodwill and best buy quit taking them so if I get any I give them to my neighbor. He also gets my printers after I remove the good board and any memory that might be in them.

Hmmm... no bugs yet.  Thanks for the heads up.  And yeah, I've just been putting the glass in the dumpster... is that the wrong thing to do?  I've decided to stop doing tvs.  Too much effort, not enough return.  But I did learn a lot from the whole process.  I'd love to scrap computers.  Just don't have a source yet.  But I'm making some contacts.  Tomorrow I might flyer my neighborhood.  I'd really like to come by some washers and dryers.  Seems like that would be fairly easy money without much waste.

Your in a populated area, so should be able to locate a computer repair store, or whathaveyou by just tossing a stone.
