What do you do with them? Alkaline Batteries can go into the trash here. And the scrap yard will take them in with the shred. Not much metal on the 6 volt ones verses the AAA, AA, C, D and 9 volt ones.

I take any dry cell batteries to Lowes when I am going in for tools, etc. They have a recycling bin there for them, and even though I do not get paid for them for me it is better than them going to the land fill.
If you open one up they are just 8 "D" size batteries in them.
Dry cell batteries have little to no harmful components in them.

Regular alkaline batteries are a pain. They are actually a net negative in recycling terms. Meaning that it is actually worse for the environment to recycle them then it is to just throw them away.
Most lantern batteries have a carbon stick in side that has many uses and is salable on ebay or to home refiners, hobbiests, expermenters, amature scientists, free energy people, and steam punkers.
