Scrapping laptops, This gold or brass? Something Else?

This is on the logic board where it connects to the battery. Not sure what type of metal this is and was looking for more info.

Looks to be gold plated to me, but don't be blinded by the shiny gold color. It takes a lot to make much of anything.

Come to realize that pretty quick. I do have a place that will give me computers they are going to recycle for free however, so I have a somewhat steady supply of things like this coming in. I originally thought gold plating as well, however I decided to cut one in half to see what was inside, but it looks the same throughout. I originally thought it might have been brass, but brass is magnetic, this will stick to a neodymium magnet, but with extremely little resistance it can be pulled off.

Brass is non-magnetic, and for standard grading of metals, don't use a neodymium magnet as they are so strong that stainless steel will slightly pull towards it. I use a standard keychain magnet as that's what the yards use. Avoids confusion that way. Just knock a magnet off the back of a junk speaker to get you started. You can do a comparison between the magnets, one will pull and the other won't.

Also take the time to read a lot of the old threads so you don't lose money. For me I would leave those on the laptop mother board and just sell the mother board as is. Make certain you do research on our buyers here on the forum for prices and reviews by members who have done business with them. Best of luck, Mike

typically battery connector (especially in cell phones and laptops will be gold plated)...it's a corrosion resistant and a good conductor since these typically are contact terminals. Most things on a high grade board like this will be gold plated.

Don't get too crazy tearing stuff like that off...it will downgrade the entire board. Yes, you can get away with a few outlying things, but don't get crazy if you want the premium some places are giving for laptop motherboards.
