I would feel bad taking this 15 ft. Christmas tree from a church and then trying to re-sell it on CL (although maybe in a garage sale wouldn't be bad??....). But strictly for scrap, would it be worth driving 25-30 miles round trip to get this thing?? I've scrapped 6 ft. tall X-mas trees but nothing this size before...

erewen- We're only getting 2 cents a pound for light steel here but I'd think a 15 ft. tree would be more than 30 lbs. I'm thinking there's probably 8-10 lbs. of insulated wire on that thing if the ratio is about the same as my 6 footers. Will probably have a small garage sale (try to move all my ceramic molds I got for free around Christmas time) on Friday of the "all-city" rummage in a couple of weks. If it didn't sell there, maybe we'd rip it open during 4th of July with a pound or two of tannerite and then scrap it...
Those trees have some weight more then 30 lb and the X-mas wire is not a big item to them ( yards ) but it's wire . The key is to know the lay of the land - the day of trash day
in the towns you'll pass. take roads that put you along homes not highways .
I live in country territory I drive 30 40 miles easy on a run to yard or to hunt . In short you have to hunt - I just assume Dumpster diving is some thing many of us do
I don't say this to be crass but put me at a starting point - - your home ...and send me to the church and I will be back with way more then the tree . I can say this cause
I have visited family from 250 miles to 1000 miles away from home and wile away I found a constant similarity Humans are the same as what is put to curb . Considering the hunt is always talked about as a main source for many , Just empty your truck / van / car and go get it have faith in finding more . Force the find - no matter what get out and look - particular at mixed trash dumpsters on construction sights. It's a crazy thing but some how you will find more scrap value then the fuel for auto . Just make it happen - wish it .
Use it as an opportunity to network. Give them cards. Churches can be a repeat source of material.
Tree is close to 100 lbs. with light strands on it. I gave up removing pre wound lights from trees. Scrap it as is! I would go and hand out some cards as mentioned above when removing this. And take a different way home to find some other treasure!
to a lot of ideas above yes its worth it not only for the resale idea but even more so for making a new customer cause churches are cash cows for electronic drives I do a 70/30 split with them unless its a much bigger church I will do a 50/50 but for smaller churches people bring in lots of stuff and they dig to donate it and can write it off and smaller churches look at $1000-2000 as a bundle vs. larger churches that may get that in a single sun service. mega churches do 100million or more a year so imagine getting to do it for one of them
If your driving this far even with 10 lbs of lights and 100lbs of steel that's only like $5 for Xmas lights if ur lucky and $5 for steel, prob won't cover gas and will not cover time. It may be a way to market as people say but I'm sure u can find 50 churches closer to you to market to.
Thanks for all the comments guys. I was thinking the best bet was to sell it via a rummage sale but the wifey was pretty pissy last night (she worked the weekend as a 12-hour RN) about me having a rummage during city-wide in 2 weeks because she's embarassed by the look of my side of the garage (its a work in progress) so asking her to borrow the van to go get the tree was sort of out the window right now. Now, if I can get the 4 boxes of the tree into my Buick and not let her see them for a while and still do a rummage....well, we'll see...
